But shouldn't he have seen that there was no one covering the base and thus thrown to first for the out? Not trying to start an argument, just curious from a scoring standpoint.

 

When I first saw the play, I was confused because he didn't immediately throw to first. But on replay Pujols was not even close to 2nd so a quick flip to Flaherty would have been the easier out. But I think Flaherty also thought Hardy was going to first. I just see how the scorer can put fault on both players, thus not being able to credit the error to anyone specifically. Similar when two outfielders drop the ball between them.

Bunting wasn't a good idea, but what a pathetic attempt to try to get it down. Any time a bunt is called - whether it's the right situation or wrong - the harm of not getting it down is much higher than the harm of a bad bunt call. See 2008  ALDS...
