Stephen Drew signed a 1 year deal

Recommended Posts

Why will there be changes? Players just agreed to the CBA. Plus it's only like 2 or 3 players a year. How about all the players who are making an extra $2-3 million a year who took the option. The teams aren't complaining the system is broken when they have to risk overpaying guys when they offer them arb.

There will be changes because players won't agree to it next time around.

It isn't good for the players... or the sport... when guys like this have trouble finding a reasonable gig and may be subject to the same thing multiple times.

Stephen Drew getting $10 million for a one year contract seems reasonable.

It isn't reasonable because if there was no draft pick compensation, he'd get a hell of a lot more than he did.  It isn't reasonable because a guy of his stature should get more than one year.  As far as context goes...  check out baseball salaries.  Joe Blanton got 2/15 and although that was a reach there are plenty of guys that get near what Drew got, or more, but aren't near the player Drew is.   That is a flawed system.

What does it tell you about how good people think Stephen Drew is if they will give Blanton $13 million but won't pay Stephen Drew? Maybe you think he is better than teams do. 29 teams passed on him and many of them are more than happy to throw good money after bad. If he didn't have draft pick compensation tied to him he wouldn't get that much more.

Jhonny Peralta got 4 years, $53 million.   They are reasonably comparable players.  Omar Infante got 4/30.   Drew would've gotten a lot more than 1/14  without the draft pick compensation.
