He gave the Rays every reason to cut him loose with a 6.88 ERA and a 1.82 WHIP. I just don't see much value in him taking him on unless he wants to play in AAA.

Speaking of done. Grant Balfour has an ERA of 12.27 and a WHIP of 2.18 so far this Spring. The irony is he and Bedard are tied for second on the team with 2 wins apiece.

I don't know, it is a close race. Blanton's ERA is 7.02 but his WHIP is 1.48.

I haven't looked at his spring numbers. Last year he had an ERA of 4.59 but his WHIP last year and really the last 3 have been bad.

I should have done more research but I was trying to be quick with the info. My thought process was if he could give us 4.5 ERA from the 5th spot that gives Skaggs and Alarez time and depth in AAA.

Having both these kids gives the opportunity to alternate bringing them up or down to AAA until one proves he is ready to grab the 5th spot. Edited March 25, 2014 by ELEVEN

I think that at this point, we shouldn't pick up anymore mid-4 ERA starters who have no prospects to improve...and indeed are likely to get worse. I think is the primary takeaway we should have from the whole Blanton SNAFU.

 

Youngish guys that teams have essentially given up on are whom we should be targeting for depth.

meh.  if he wants to go to AAA and wait there to maybe make half a dozen spot starts at most then so be it.  I prefer to have Alvarez and Shoemaker ahead of him on the depth chart.  

 

He can take Blanton's spot.

Need to find someone who can go down to Salt Lake along with Shoemaker, LeBlanc, Grube, and possibly Alvarez. I like Alvarez and Shoemaker as depth/long relief options, but the Angels need another decent pitcher stashed in AAA.
