Winter Meetings Strategy: The Gamble

Robert Carson looked good in AAA too in 2013.

But judging by the MLB stats, it's no guarantee that he can do it at the MLB level.

Salas' last true MLB success was in 2011.    That's not a lot to hang a hat on.

Carson's AAA stats tell me there is no guarantee he is a MLB pitcher. At first glance his 3.45 AAA ERA seems to say he has some upside but his other AAA stats say otherwise:

WHIP 1.483

K/9 7.6

BB/9 3.8

K/BB 2.04

It is only a 60 inning sample size, but those are very medicore numbers.

Just my opinion, but I think we have relievers to trade.

1. Friere

2. Burnett

3. Smith

4. Salas

5. Jepsen

6. Kohn

7. De La Rosa

Add a couple of the non roster gurs like Rapada, and I could easily see two or three pieces moved from the pen.

oh god, please fire jepsen out of a cannon or set him out to sea(with the proper safety equipment and emergency supplies) or anything

The conundrum, as I see it, is that we have two way over paid position players with long term obligations, and the best player in the game, who also will garner a huge pay increase starting in 2015. This dictates a " win now " approach. However, the Angels are lacking some key pieces to be able to be successful in the near future. You either go all in and sign a top free agent pitcher and trade for another quality arm or you blow the thing up and rebuild. We all know that Arte is not the rebuilding type, so for him to put a cap on salaries at this point is counter to his win now philosophy.

We will see where it ends up but if we just sign two scrap heap type starters we are doomed for the next few years at least.

I think Salas will do a decent job but was it worth trading Grichuk for him? It looks like he can be a platoon outfielder at worst which means he still has some value.

Also, it's not that Grichuk is some fantastic prospect and I'm mad he's gone. It's the fact that we traded away a guy who was a top 5/6 guy in our system and we traded him away for a guy who was going to be non tendered. There's not really any reason to be trading prospects right now when our farm system is one of the worst systems in the past 20 years.

I'm not overly upset about the trade though. Just have to let it play out and see if Salas can return to his 2011 self or not.

I'm talking about getting better prospects than we currently have. Not more not less but better.

I'm talking about getting better prospects at positions we have no current, near MLB-ready depth, like starting pitching.  If we can trade minor league players at positions where they are blocked or we have depth, regardless of how fond we are of that player, for promising players at positions we are weak or are years away from being ready we should move on it.  Borenstein may turn out to be great, but I would trade him a heartbeat for a starting pitching prospect with the same upside.

What is sad is we are actually weaker at outfield prospects than we are at pitching prospects.

Yes, but when you currently have Trout, Calhoun, Trumbo, Shuck, Borenstein and Hamilton for the next 4 years, you can be thin there and replenish in the draft.
