OC Register: Angels’ Anthony Rendon hoping to avoid more injuries in his ‘job’

How about some respect, leadership and extra effort for the owner and organization that signed you to a contract that will make future descendents enormously wealthy?

Rather than grumbling and deflecting away from those responsibilities.

Everyone on earth prioritizes their families above their jobs. But how many pro athletes actually have to repeatedly demean their job? It's not likely they are mutually exclusive.

I think that signing that bloated contract was seen by him as reaching the end of his objectives. He had already won a World Series with personal honors.  No higher plateau to aim for.  'Been there, done that.'

Actually having to fulfill expectations for all that money then felt like a burden. Maybe not immediately but incrementally. Especially with the string of injuries. And maybe with disillusionment about other players and team dynamics.

He has this season however to change some of the narrative. Without Ohtani, presumably healthy, a new manager and lowered expectations there's a chance for him to actually excel at his job.

Yeah, he'd better not get injured because if he does, he doesn't care about the game.

He'd better help guys be better (oh wait, O'Hoppe said he already does that).

Nah, he should just lie so Duran respects him more.

Lmao at 2020. Rendon's only good season with the Angels was when the season was 60 games long.

I know this might be hard for you to understand, but Rendon was always that guy and he was one of the best 3B over the last decade prior to coming to Anaheim. Literally nothing changed for him aside from him getting injured constantly. Nothing. But sure, go off with your superficial narrative. It's par for the course for you.

Doesn't matter. The Angels paid him a shit ton of money and, results wise, he has failed miserably.

You sound like Albert Pujols telling reporters to look at his career numbers.

As has been mentioned, sure it makes sense on personal level to miss your family while you’re at work… Does he not have a home in so cal with his family, dude is acting like he’s deployed in Iraq for 9 months out of the year. In reality he spends, what 9-10 hours a day at the ballpark? Probably arrives at 1-2pm for a 7pm game that’s over at 10…. family is welcome to go to work and watch you for 3-4 hours of that work day, unlike most professions. And you’re being paid an exorbitant amount of money, more money in 1 year than most Americans will se in their lifetime. “Make a living” you’re making 35 million, dummy. You could walk away right now and be set for life, are we supposed to feel bad for you?

you signed the contract, either retire and let someone more deserving and appreciative of the money and roster spot take over, or get on the field and be the best damn baseball player you can…

I don’t not care about my job and the job I’m doing each day because I wanna be at home teaching my kid how to ride a bike. Lazy, entitled mentality to have.

Nobody really cares whether he likes baseball or not, it's how he carries himself.  He's the living embodiment of "you're not wrong, you're just an asshole".

It's a lot easier to deal with a personality like that when he's an MVP candidate and one of the best players in baseball.  The schtick starts to grow old when you can't stay on the field with a quarter billion dollar contract.

So, your contention is he isn't trying? Was that true in 2020 when he had an MVP caliber season? Or when he won a WS? He didn't care then either.

The Game is a constant grind you only truly get approximately a few weeks off every year from the physical side of what your position is. Pitching = Throwing, EDPlayer = Hitting or taking Ground Balls. You're still in the gym most days working out, maintaining range of motion you might adjust your workout load to high reps less weight.

But, this Profession is 100% a daily grind both in and off season. And requires a passion and commitment either for the game or money to motivate you. Those are the only two constants!

Once you've made it, got the ring, the contract, married, have a family, children it's hard for all of the planets to align.

Every experience it differently.

Maybe, his issue is he has never felt himself the rah-rah Leader type and was never that kind of an individual. And he finds it hard to understand what is expected in the entirety after signing the Meg Deal?

But, then again, who knows!?!!?!?!... I'm just throwing $hit against a wall? He could just be a dyck??? *shoulder shrug*

You mean when he was being paid by a previous employer? Nobody made him sign a second contract. He did it, it was his hand that put pen to paper. His mindset, which is dictated by his quotes, is that he doesn’t give a shit. That is not what a fan base or an employer want to hear when you the employee has provided next to nothing.  His contract actually prohibits the employer from improving elsewhere.

I respect a man who puts his kids and marriage before his job. He's right; it's just a job. But he's not a software programmer or ad salesman. Millions of strangers from around the world watch his "job" for entertainment. More than that, so many kids dream of playing Major League Baseball but only a fraction of a percent ever get that chance.

He could show some humility and gratefulness for getting to do something very, very few people ever get to do — AND still prioritize his family life. He makes more than enough money to allow for quality time with wife and kids all throughout the year.

Well said Taylor.

Listening to MLB radio on the way home from work they were saying these comments will be a huge distraction in the Angels club house all year. Also was said Rendone will rub 99% of the baseball players the wrong way with what was said by him.

Maybe so, but he'll always have Pancake Bear!

It won’t be a huge distraction because Wash won’t let it be a huge distraction.

They knew everything about Ohtani but apparently that was a distraction too...

Well because it was a distraction. At the very least it didn’t allow for a routine for starting pitchers.  Rendon doesn’t have that type of impact.
