MLB Trade Rumors: Angels Offseason Outlook

Recommended Posts

Problem with Snell and Montgomery is being 31 next season.   No more big money contracts to 30 somethings!

Either sign Sonny Gray on a 3 year deal or Yamamoto, plus bring back Lorenzen for the lower part of the rotation.

Trade Anderson plus half the remaining salary and trade Adell.

Then sign 2-3 proven relievers, and if enough money is left, sign Bellinger as long as it’s not for more than 5 years/$100 million.

Gray/Yamamoto, Detmers, Canning, Sandoval, and Lorenzen/Silseth (needing to build up Silseth’s innings)

Schanuel, Neto, Trout, Bellinger, Drury, Rendon (mainly DH), O’Hoppe, Ward/Moniak, Rengifo (mainly 3B)

No big money contracts longer than three years for any pitcher over 30/31/32. Obviously factoring in current and past health status and cumulative career workload. Just too many risks with injury and reduced velocity.

Many pitchers tweak their repertoire and revamp their use and sequence  of pitches as they get older.  But not are all as good as they were in their prime. Even those that are still good in their early thirties most likely won't sustain the same level or workload in their mid/late thirties.

Of course there are the exceptions. But not many Verlander types out there. In the past you had loads of really good older pitchers who were still effective into their late thirties. For various reasons things have changed.

I'd trade Rengifo and make an offer to Justin Turner.  He can play 3B, and this team needs a leader.

Drury can handle it when Turner-Rendon need a day, or in Rendon's case, a month, off.

Rengifo and Drury give you a lot of INF flexibility…I’d hang on to both…

At this point Moustakas is either a coach or a minor league instructor but his playing days should be over with. He was a negative WAR for the Angels and a negative WAR the two previous season. So wipe Moustakas from your lists.

sounds like a prime candidate for a 3/45 contract.

When has signing a proven reliever paid off?

I feel very undecided about what direction this team should go and whether putting a bunch of money into them is really worth it.

They just lost Ohtani, Rendon is basically a ghost, and Trout is averaging about half a season per year while showing signs of decline this year.  Drury was a nice pickup but has 1yr left.  Anderson sucks.

On the other hand, they've got a nice collection of young, solid players.  Several of which have some decent upside.

But it sorta feels like a bunch of the young guys really need to come into their own AND the veteran guys need to play all year and play well.

Otherwise, investing in expensive free agents seems like an unnecessary risk.

As consistent as Turner has been, he’s also 39 next season and only played some 50 games at 3B since 2022.

I think you are right but this is rather depressing.

Moore was good and proven.  This was Estevez first year as a closer and Iglesias was a trade.

The only "proven closer" in the FA market is probably Hader.....and I doubt we're going there....I'd like to see another Iglesias type trade, but that may not be realistic....the stars were aligned for that deal....

Updated off-season thoughts (assuming not signing Ohtani):

Sign Yamamoto or Gray, sign Lorenzen, sign Bellinger, sign Hader, sign one other proven late innings guy, and trade Anderson along with half his salary?

That adds what, about $70-75 million to AAV payroll.   Wouldn’t that just put them at the tax threshold, and then back below it after 2024 with dropping Drury and Estevez from payroll?

Only caveat is not offering more than 5 years to anyone, only 3-4 to Gray and Hader, and 2 years to Lorenzen.

It’d be difficult to get them all for $70-$75M IMO.

Yamamoto/Gray is probably $22.5M-$25M.

Bellinger is probably $25M-$30M.

Hader is probably $20M.

Lorenzen is probably $10-$12M.

So if you get them all on the low end of their ranges, maybe you can fit it.
