The Official Shohei Ohtani Trade Return Thread (if the Angels trade him)

If the Angels get into the playoffs and go on a miracle run to win it all, maybe Ohtani would think "mission accomplished" and then feel like going to a new team to start the next phase of his career. Obviously a remote Twilight Zone scenario, and the most unlikely. But I've been watching old Twilight Zone episodes recently and everything seems to require a Rod Sterling interpretation.

Speaking of the Jays/Seattle series, the border lineup was two hours long for the brainwashed west coast Canadians trying to get to Seattle to watch their beloved Blue Jays. For that reason alone I want Seattle to win though it helps with the big picture too.

I wouldn’t read too much into it…

Ohtani seems to be a pretty private guy, these types of things are usually between FO and agent, there’s a translation barrier, everything that we can assume is already apparent (Angels are interested, Ohtani seemingly open but noncommittal)…

Could be Perry is having high-level chats with Ohtani’s agent and they’re letting him focus, which isn’t unusual at all, knowing that when time comes they’ll either re-sign him or they won’t. I don’t think it needs to be a constant, ongoing in-season dialogue between team and player. What the Angels want to say and inquire has probably already happened either off-season or through his agent.

6 years in and people still havent figured out that the man simply doesnt say things publicly.  I recently read a story where his parents basically said, we will know about his GF when he tells us he's going to get married.

Dude must kill it at poker.

I don't understand why he won't say of course he would be interested in resigning if he really was. It's not like he is going to lose leverage in contract talks.

It can truly be as simple as recognizing, for both him and the Angels, that it doesn’t need to be discussed right now. His focus, even before signing here, was baseball 100%.

He has an agent for this. It’s his job to talk these details with the FO and when the time is right - the off-season - the talks/offers come in and he makes the decision.

It seems pretty apparent Ohtani doesn’t want to mess with this stuff during the season, or at least not publicly.

Anything the Angels can offer now, they can offer in the winter when those decisions need to be made. For fans it’s easy to get caught up with what if‘S, but fact of the matter is this is something that doesn’t need to happen now.

The perfect scenario is to trade him to the Dodgers for a huge return. And then he comes back here this winter.

And then a video is revealed of Shohei and Arte, smoking cigars. Where dodger fans find out shohei wasn't a good guy after all.

Basically the part from Total Recall when Arnold found out he was in with the bad guys all along.

There are like 4000 stories like this and none of them have anything to say.

Can we kinda look out for each other and try to just post links to stories that actually have something, anything, of substance?

It's gotten so monotonous. Every time Ohtani goes on the road stories about a trade focus on that city. If it's not an obvious non starter.

Later in the week they are going to be in Toronto. And as expected, a Toronto media story surfaces about a trade to the Jays.

What a circus.Click bait heaven for online media. And each team in the mix puts out it's own narrative

Ever wonder if even just simply making an aggressive attempt to buy is enough to convince Ohtani to re-sign? Even if they don’t make the playoffs or don’t last long if they do?

Maybe that’s an added perk to landing someone like Stroman or Goldschmidt or Giolito or Flaherty, someone who has a strong chance to still be here next year and has some impressive personal hardware and postseason experience.

Believe what people do, not what they say.  Ohtani is going to want assurances that Artie will spend what it takes, this is the time to do it.

They’ve been sellers every single deadline that Ohtani has been here, FWIW. Unless you count the trade for Stassi which I don’t.

Maybe buying for the first time coupled with strong play from youth makes a strong impression.

Standing pat instead of bringing in some support (to this 2023 team that is within striking distance), to me, would be a loud and clear message to Ohtani that he won’t be able to count on ownership here to do what needs to be done to actually compete.

The Angels have to thread the needle carefully.  Make an aggressive, smart move that helps this team now, showing support for that clubhouse to win, but one that doesn’t gut the farm. . . because the overall condition of the team’s position to compete going forward will also matter in re-signing Ohtani.

It would probably also go a long way to dispel 'trade Ohtani' chatter that has to be hanging over the clubhouse too. Even a small move now would add a little boost.

As much as they're trained to tune stuff like that out, and as unlikely as an Ohtani deal is, it still has to be weighing on them to some degree. Doesn't seem to be adding detrimental pressure as of now, but don't want to see them start pressing either. Detroit feels like it could be that environment...a bad team they should be confident in beating, but going up against three solid starters. If they fall behind at all it could get to them.
