Goldschmidt staying right where he is.

Cards likely. will be sellers at deadline time -  they just got swept at home by. the. SF Giants today when the Cards pen snatched defeat from the jaw of victory  once again -- but Goldy and Arenado not going anywhere. The rest of the team perhaps -- they've got a surplus of. OF'ers and an extra good feeling MIF. But not the one thing everyone wants --  pitching.

No. That is tearing apart the future for a 35 year old 1st baseman and below league average pitcher that is a free agent next year. It's the stupid shit that drowned this franchise for 10 years.

Blarg, we have a difference of opinion on value of Goldschmidt.

It's going to take at least one solid major league piece, probably a pitcher. They'd probably want Detmers instead of Sandoval, but I'd say no to that, unless it was a one for two swap, meaning Detmers for Flaherty and Goldschmidt.

And as for the future, Bush maybe, but keeping Bachman here and Detmers, so... I dont see a place where Suarez, Davidson have jobs beyond the season.

To trade for the reigning NL MVP, it's going to take players/prospects of value.

They traded Kotchman for Texieria, but it would take more than that, as Goldy is under contract next year.

No trade for Goldschmidt would tear apart the future, nor would he just be a salary dump - he won the MVP last year, his contract is reasonable, and he’s still quite good - would be second on this team in WAR and OPS+, only behind Sho.

I imagine the Cards would have a lot of interest in Quero, given the way Contreras has been handled, but they don’t need that to be imminent. Sure, it would be great if the Angels had O’Hoppe and Quero as the future tandem, but there’s still risk with Quero and rarely do teams equitably split time with two catchers. It’s gonna be O’Hoppe a lionsshare of the time, and someone like Thaiss or even Wallach will be a capable secondary guy for ‘24-‘25. Do I want to part with Quero? No way, but he may be a centerpiece that makes sense for both clubs without the Halos having to lose too much else - it would be great to hold on to as many arms as possible still, and building around Quero could help keep names like Silseth, Bush, Bachman from ever being mentioned. Adell, Detmers (who I really wouldn’t want to move at all), and Bachman all have some geographical ties to nearby…Neto’s ascension makes it much easier to part with one of our infield prospects now too. Adams is probably buried behind Adell and Moniak and seems like the type of OF that St. Louis would like.

There is probably both a Quality offer the Angels could make, or a Quantity offer, and neither would be cheap, but neither would break the future. The potential inclusion of an arm could add to either.

Lastly, I have to think Houston is really watching this. They’re in the race due to the strength of their pitching, but that depth is getting stretched really thin and could come apart. Alvarez is out for a month, and Abreu looks *cooked*. Goldschmidt is a Houston boy. He’d immediately give them a boost with Yordan out and maybe Abreu covering DH helps him get back on track. This is a good preventative move for the Angels to not just make themselves better, but to also keep the Astros on the edge this year and next, which could be good for retaining Shohei.

The one good thing is that the Astros don't really have any pitching depth in the upper minors. They are using guys and they are pitching well, after a bunch of injuries to their starting five.

If they wanted to trade Hunter Brown and a prospect, they could likely make this work, Brown is valued right about where Detmers was. But I doubt they want to do that.

The Cards have a young OF, and don't need more young OF, and they are perennial contenders, so they would only trade their best hitter if they got multiple starters with upside that would be ready now or soon.

So, it depends on if the Angels are willing to give up multiple young guys, in addition to Suarez and a solid prospect. I doubt they trade multiple starters but I could see Sandoval being dealt instead of Quero.

Would you as the Cardinals really say no to Sandoval, Suarez, Bush and a guy like Placencia plus maybe Fletcher (for some Salary) and Adell?

Now thats a haul to give up, and so I am assuming they take back both Flaherty and Goldy, but you'd really have to think about that.

The Angels would then likely move Walsh, so maybe he, Davidson, and prospect like Sanchez or Vera, gets you Keller and Chapman?

That's a lot of moving pieces, but you'd be keeping your top prospect catchers, and bringing in two new arms to replace one out of your rotation in Sandoval. You'd still have Silseth and Erla and others in the minors for depth (Plus Bachman and Anderson in the pen).

Lineup Porn:

LF Ward / Moniak

DH Ohtani

CF Trout

1B Goldschmidt

3B Rendon

RF Renfroe / Moniak

2B Drury/Ursula

C Thaiss/Wallach

SS Neto

Bench

Rengifo / Moniak / Wallach / Urshela

Rotation

Ohtani / Barria / Canning / Detmers / Flaherty / Keller

BP

Estevez / Moore / Devenski / Chapman / Bachman / Joyce / Soriano / Anderson

well, here’s something else to keep in mind about dealing from guys like Bush, Bachman, Silseth, Crow, Erla, Koch, Quero…

Perry is aggressive AF about promoting minor leaguers. We may eat into depth this deadline, but we’re a month shy of probably drafting a couple guys who, at this rate, will be scratching the majors in ‘24 anyways. It’s a somewhat radical and reckless way to operate, but I’m not quite as worried about the trading AA talent give the way they’ve drafted and promoted Neto, Bachman, Detmers, Silseth, and Joyce - and for the most part, those have not backfired.

It kinda goes against conventional baseball wisdom in that sense, but the track record they have the last couple seasons of drafting and aggressively promoting is working to a degree. And they’ve drafted an incredible amount of arms.

I don’t think we’re throwing away the future by trading a couple guys we can likely replace in the draft.

Our top 5 Prospects Right Now are probably

1) Quero, 2) Bush, 3) Guzman 4) Rada 5)Bachman

Assuming O'Hoppe, Neto, and Silseth have all graduated. They would rank 1, 2, 4 probably, Quero being 3rd.

The 11th pick will be someone like one of these guys --> From Jim Callis.

9. Rockies: Chase Dollander, RHP, Tennessee (No. 6)
Dollander entered the year as the clear best pitching prospect, but now teams are struggling to figure out what to make of an inconsistent spring during which he has lasted five innings in just one of his five starts. There's still time for him to pitch his way back into top-six-pick discussion, especially in a Draft with few college arms worthy of first-round consideration.

10. Marlins: Noble Meyer, RHP, Jesuit HS, Portland, Ore. (No. 16)
Many teams are leery of taking high school pitchers in the first round, but this might be more floor than ceiling for Meyer, who has a mid-90s fastball, potential wipeout slider and outstanding makeup.

11. Angels: Rhett Lowder, RHP, Wake Forest (No. 9)
Lowder appeals to teams who covet reliability, as he has posted eight quality starts in 11 outings while repeatedly working with a 92-95 mph fastball, plus changeup and plenty of strikes.

12. D-backs: Colin Houck, SS, Parkview HS, Lilburn, Ga. (No. 18)
Another prep shortstop on the rise, Houck has all-around ability and stands out most with his power potential. The former quarterback should continue to get better as he leaves football in his rear-view mirror.

Think the move will be SP help...not a rental, but someone with 1 additional year. Almost an Ohtani exit contingency plan.

I also think 1b gets addressed. Walsh is great defensively, but my god his bat is invisible at this point. If he could hit in the .230-.240 range then sure its justified, but you cannot trot out an automatic out on a contending team.

Good points made here. The Cards are well stocked with young position player depth, but could use a Catcher like Quero in their system and they badly need starting pitching. Would think Quero plus a guy like Ky Bush or Jack Kochanowicz could get the conversation started. A move like this would be akin to going all in for a Shohei extension assuming Arte is willing to pay up accordingly

also gotta add that I cannot find anywhere that Goldy has a NTC…
