OC Register: Angels infielder Luis Rengifo a finalist for first utility Gold Glove

Recommended Posts

Angels infielder Luis Rengifo is one of the finalists for the first utility Gold Glove, which honors a player who excelled at multiple positions, according to an announcement from Rawlings on Thursday.

Former Angels outfielder Brandon Marsh, who finished the season with the Philadelphia Phillies after he was traded at the deadline, was named a finalist in left field.

Gold Glove winners are determined by a vote of managers and coaches from each team as well as a statistical component, the SABR Defensive Index, which comprises approximately 25% of the total.

Winners will be announced during a special edition of “Baseball Tonight” on ESPN on Nov. 1 at 2 p.m. PT, prior to Game 4 of the World Series.

Rengifo had a breakthrough season at the plate, earning everyday playing time for the final three months of the season. He played 99 games at second base, 39 at third, 19 at shortstop and five in the outfield.

Whit Merrifield, who began the season with the Kansas City Royals and finished with the Toronto Blue Jays, and the New York Yankees’ DJ LeMahieu are the other finalists for the utility award.

Marsh is up against Andrew Benintendi, of the Royals and Yankees, and the Cleveland Guardians’ Steven Kwan.

Rengifo in 2022:

2B: -1 DRS, -3 OAA, -3 RAA

3B: 3 DRS, -3 OAA, -2 RAA

SS: -2 DRS, -2 OAA, -1 RAA

LF: 0.2 Inn.

RF: 14.1 Inn.

Not sure how he got nominated over Fletcher, who accumulated more DRS, OAA, and RAA at 2B/SS in less innings.

Rafael Palmiero won the GG at 1B despite being a DH for 128 games.  Nothing will ever top that one.
