Maddon would rather have a L/R balance in the lineup in exchange for a weaker defense. 

Ward is by far better defensively in RF and a better hitter as well. He's also coming off a 2-4 performance after a recent slump so it makes sense.

Two actual outfielders, including a former Gold Glove, are starting today in the outfield. I also think Rengifo has an arm that works better from the corner than Ward's.

Great.  So Ward gets a couple of clutch hits in Tampa, then sits in NY.  In the meantime, we've lost a couple games due to poor defense, especially in the OF, and Ward sits for Rengifo.  

The roster is a trainwreck.

Or, how about Fletcher in LF, Schebler in RF and Rengifo at 2B.  At least Fletcher has played some OF in the last couple of seasons.

Ward was a major player in at least a couple of those outfield oopsies.

Well, I've been there in the summer and I usually stay inside. And it is 115 dry desert degrees. I also lived several decades in the San Joaquin. But in neither place was I surrounded by 3 million acres of dried out roman candles, otherwise known as trees.

Lived in san Juaquin valley too.  I much preferred 115 in Las Vegas than 100 in Visalia.  The humidity is a killer
