I don't get the concept of having Robles start and then send Barria in. You basically make Robles unavailable late in the game, mess with Barria's routine, Barria still might only pitch 4 innings (as it seems most of our starters do) so now you sit in the 6th inning already down a reliever? 

 

Can someone tell me how this makes sense?

The data shows Barria has trouble in the first inning, so they figured they'd start him in inning #2. What I imagine they'll find out is that it's HIS first inning that he struggles, not the legitimate 1st inning....

Not sure exactly, but I'll guess that the 1-2-3 hitters who are generally tasked with looking at a lot of pitches from the starter, only get to see this opener.

Yeah, if anything messing with his routine might make things worse, unless they feel that pretending he is a reliever might help him get over that first inning issue? I mean if its works then I'll shut up about it.

Barria doesn't have to face the top of their batting order.

Barria gets to skip the heart of the order the first time through, so the third time through the lineup he'll start with the middle, then the back part of the order before facing the top of the order for a third time. It's been shown that pitchers do significantly worse the third time a hitter sees them in the game, and this hopefully lessens that impact and allows Barria to maybe face an extra few batters.

Also this allows Ausmus to play matchups in the top of the first inning against the top of the order when he might've had to pull Barria early to do so later in the game.
