Swing Rate

Recommended Posts

Someone posted earlier this week that the Angels had the lowest swing rate in the league, along with the fewest strike outs.  To me if they can keep this up that would be awesome.  We all hate the long games that Boston and NY play, but what I really like is the way they work the count, which I would assume low swing rates would accomplish.

All that being said, can someone please tell this to Simmons, he certainly seems to be popping up a ton of first pitches.

I think there are a lot of variable in this number not known.
Right now our on base % as a team is 293, 22nd in mlb.   We have drawn 44 walks, 19th in mlb.
Having the lowest swing rate and still be in in the bottom third on those 2 numbers could just suggest they are taking too many pitches trying to work the stats as the results arent where they should be from that number.

All of those things improve when we have major league players return, like Upton and Ohtani.  Sure the walks are great, but getting to a bullpen early is always a good thing.  Like we have said many times as it relates to the Angels, if you overwork a pen it has a lasting affect on a team that goes beyond that game.

The missing guys have nothing to do with the listed stat though.

Babip.... .227, dead last in mlb.   .300ish is the norm...

Their OBP is 80 points better than their average.   If they were hitting .260 and not .210, then we'd be looking at a top 10 OBP.

True, but you can tell just by watching the games that this is a team philosophy, and can at least assume those guys will follow suit.

im not knocking the philosophy per se, only that a low swing rate that doesnt equate into higher obp and more walks doesnt seem to be the expected outcome.
If we have the lowest swing rate effectively, we should have higher values in those categories, we dont.
This would seem to suggest at a glance that we are taking too many good pitches.

Perhaps, likely even, all im saying is that a low swing rate that isnt producing more walks seems to suggest taking too many good pitches.
