Rays are weird...   Extremely smart at putting a team together but apparently they want to not draw fans in two different countries.

2000 -  926,272 - last in MLB
2001 -  642,745 - last in MLB -- half the attendance of the second to last Marlins
2002 -  812,045 - last in MLB
2003 - 1,205,639 - last in MLB
2004 -  749,550 - last in MLB -- again, almost half that of the second to last Rays

That is wretched.   But was part of it Loria tearing the team apart after their solid run in the late 1970s through the mid 1990s?

Loria didn't buy the Expos until 1999, they were dead last in MLB attendance the year before he bought them and had not managed to average 20K per game in any of the 5 seasons before that.   They were second to last in attendance 1993 when they were a 93 win team and 10th worst in 1994 when they had the best team in MLB.

Attendance there was never great...   Their all time best was 28,630 in 1983 good for 3rd best in the NL.  The Angels went 75-87 and averaged over 31K.

That does change things, thanks for the clarification.

I wonder what changed then after 1983?   Economy in Montreal?   People not liking Olympic Stadium ultimately?   It isn't the most glamorous stadium, to be sure, pretty much a concrete jungle like environment?

Not sure about 1983-93 but the Expos never recovered from the strike in 94....They were leading the NL East by a wide margin when the season was scuttled.....fan support after the strike wasn't good and then they started trading a very core of young players....

After starting 1-8, the Reds have gone 34-30 since and are only 4.5 games out of the Wild Card lead.  Their offense is damn dull but imagine the Angels with this pitching consistency:

5 starters all with an ERA+ over 100, averaging 5.4 Innings per start, and Alex Wood is still on the DL.

If they can get any kind of offense going, they would be tough down the stretch.

Castillo please.  we'll give them anyone but Adell.

Phillies lost all three games to the Nationals this week.  They're just 2-8 in their last 10.

Yep and the Braves have gone 8-2 in that time.  Freeman, Acuna and Riley are bringing the thunder while no one in their starting line-up has an OPS+ under 100...pretty balanced.  Soroka, Teheran, and Fried give them a solid 1-3 in rotation.

For the Phillies, besides Hoskins, the Phillies offense has been pretty 'meh' and Nola and Arrieta have both struggled.  Harper leading the NL in K's is an interesting look as well.

Maybe something like Marsh, Suarez, and Rivas?   At least we know that Castillo can average close to 6 innings/start.   He would be the ace right away on this pitching staff, with Canning close behind, and maybe negate the need for someone like Cole.   But the Reds may not be interested in any trades like that, as they get closer to contending for a WC spot.
