I guess if there is any silver lining here, it's that the Angels may as well offer a 2-yr deal for $8m or whatever it was that the Rays and Twins did for Eovaldi and Pineda, and hope he comes back from this.

Biggest concern? Perhaps those PRP injections aren't working, which doesn't bode well for Shohei.

I've already mentally prepared myself for Ohtani eventually needing TJS. The guy went from a Grade I UCL sprain in the offseason to a Grade II within months of pitching. I'm not really optimistic that rest/PRP or stem cell treatment will keep this at bay, especially when he throws as hard as he does and throws a ton of splitters. Feels like they're just delaying the inevitable there

Plus, the Angels have had such shit luck with arms the last few years that you just expect the worst now.

I mean, at this point, if Ohtani is a candidate for TJS, just go ahead and do it. This year is lost, and I hate to say that. I believe in this team until they're mathematically eliminated every year as a result of the 2002 magic, but it makes too much sense to punt this season, bring up some youth, and go back to the drawing board for 2020, yes, 2020 and beyond. 

Add to the farm, clear up some payroll for Trout, play the youth next year and see if they surprise like the Braves, Phillies, and Athletics this year. Get Ohtani DHing next year and in line to return to the mound healthy in 2020. Re-sign Garrett to a 2-yr deal with that year in mind too.

Barria, Shoemaker, and Trop are still on the roster. Canning and Suarez will likely be ready to contribute to the team next season too. THey probably need to add a starter in FA though IMO

What's preventing Garrett from becoming a free agent and testing the waters?

We may have seen Garrett pitch the last time as an Angel.  I wouldn't mind signing him to a 2-3 year cheap contract.  Whisper in Trout's ear how this organization takes care of its folks.

I feel bad for Garrett. He's a competitor and doesn't want to sit out an entire season and a half.

I don't think losing him is that big of a deal for the Angels. He was moderately above average this season, and it was kind of hit-and-miss whether he would pitch a good game or get shelled.

Nothing. 

But Eovaldi, Minor, and Pineda have sort of established the TJS recovery contract as a 2/$8m. Certainly affordable by the Angels, and other teams, but at the same time, it really levels the playing field, more so than if he'd be a healthy FA at season's end. 

Could even say offering him a 2/$8m in October is a much safer, valuable contract than whatever we would have offered had he made it through the year.

Do the 2 years/$8 million, and convince him to return as a late innings specialist with that stuff.   His delivery/follow through will never allow him to pitch even 170 innings in a season.   Then maybe he can return in September 2019, if somehow the Halos are solidly in contention and in need of a late innings guy.

Absolutely. Gleyber Torres underwent TJS in June last season and was ready at the beginning of the season -- and he plays MI. There's no reason Ohtani couldn't have it now and be ready to DH next season. I'd be shocked to see him pitch again this season but it would be devastating to see him get re-injured this season or even next and lose him until 2020-2021.

Somebody can always scuttle the market with a bigger deal......but, if they are all pretty comparable, then it’s a question of where he wants to be, who he trusts with rehab.....

That's peanuts to the Angels '20 payroll commitments. And even less impacting to the luxury tax cost. Totally worth the risk, especially if they toy with the idea of having him in the pen. And half the board feels like he needs to be here for Trout to re-sign, soooo...

Comes down to where he wants to be.
