If we get Stanton great! If we don’t then I hope we get Ohtani. If we don’t get Ohtani then I hope we get Gordon. If we don’t get Gordon then F U Arte!

That's a big step down from Ohtani to Gordon.  There are some very good players (and alternatives) between the two.

Well at least you walked it out all the way out to your own personal interest.

We all know you love the FU Arte part.  I'm sure you are crossing your fingers.

I must say that if Stanton accepts a trade to the Giants, he's pretty short sighted.

If they trade Panik, Beade and Shaw they lose the only everyday position player they have under 30 except if Arroyo steps in at 2b.  Bumgarner and Ty Blach are the only starters under 30.  Losing Shaw and Beade would make their farm the worst in baseball by a ton.  Like Halos 2015 bad.

They have a payroll pushing over 180mil for 2018 already, and 114.4 mil in guaranteed salaries for 2020 to six players who will be 33, 34, 35, 33, 32, and 35.

oh and they won 64 games in 2017.

Even if they somehow stay healthy, they've got 1 maybe 2 years of being possibly good before they're going to have to dismantle.

I think the Dogs eventually swoop in, eat his whole contract and give up a marginal return.

SP and DH. By the numbers of course. That's why Otani is a good fit.

Get back to reality.  Our DH is filled.   No matter how much you dislike thve guy.  We are not pursuing any FA starting pitcher.  Applet already said that.  We can afford Stanton,  Gordon, and Otani and still be under the cap.

Agreed. I can see them sending something decent back, but ive felt all along he would end up a dodger...unfortunately

great plan. how do you convince the marlins to take such a shitty deal?

How is it a shitty deal? Marlins flip Calhoun for something, and shed themselves of 80 percent of Stanton's contract.

The Marlins have no negotiating leverage here. Their options are either to trade Stanton to a team to which he will accept a trade (gotta assume the Angels would be at the top of that list), or hold onto him. The latter doesn't really seem to be an option. The Angels could probably lowball them, and if Stanton wants to come here instead of anywhere else, the Marlins would have few options.

so the marlins pay 100 million dollars for kole calhoun and his salary? that seems like a good deal? there's absolutely no upside in that deal for them. if that was the best deal i could get as a marlin, then i'd just keep him until he decides he wants to play ball with a few other teams.

No, they flip Calhoun, and they rid themselves of the vast majority of Stanton's contract. Again, they have terrible leverage here.

Alternatively, they send us Stanton and Gordon and eat the entirety of Gordon's deal. Angels get Stanton and Gordon for a net of 20 mil a year.

Why would they do that when they can get Panik and more from the Giants?

Because Stanton may not want to go to the Giants and may not approve a trade to them. In fact, the Giants could offer their whole damn team, and it won't matter if Stanton prefers to play for some other team that wants to acquire him.
