OC Register: Justin Upton wins AL Silver Slugger, while Mike Trout misses out for the first time

Recommended Posts

Justin Upton, who last week agreed to a five-year deal to stay with the Angels, won his third Silver Slugger award on Thursday, while Mike Trout came up empty for the first time in his career.

The Silver Slugger is awarded to the best offensive player at each position, in each league, as voted by managers and coaches. Three outfielders are honored, without regard to their position.

Aaron Judge and George Springer won the other two American League outfield awards, shutting out Trout, who had won five in a row.

Trout missed about six weeks with a thumb injury, but still finished the season hitting .306 with 33 homers and a league-leading 1.071 OPS.

Upton hit .273 with 35 homers, 109 RBIs and a .901 OPS with the Detroit Tigers and Angels. He was traded to the Angels for the last month of the season, and then he agreed to a restructured deal instead of exercising his opt-out clause.

Judge hit 52 homers with a 1.049 OPS, and Springer hit .283 with 34 homers and an .889 OPS.

Is there an unwritten rule that you have to play at least 140-150 games to win a Silver Slugger?

It is amusing that Upton only played 27 games in the AL and yet still won the Silver Slugger in that league. Trout pretty much buried him in every hitting category over 114 games and gets snubbed.

I will be first to sign the petition to eliminate Detroit from the AL.
