Did an early morning hike this morning.  Badden Powell.  Sucky thing is, took 2 hours to drive there, and 2 1/2 hours to drive back.  The hike was only a bit over 3 hours.

So it was hot in the flatlands, but up there, it was nice and cool.  Actually needed a jacket on the peak.  I'm glad I started at dawn, as it was overcast all the way up.  High 60's in the parking lot when I started, in the 80's in the parking lot when I finished.

2 hikers found dead in Nevada’s Valley of Fire State Park in scorching 114-degree heat

The two women had set off on the trails at the state park, located south of Overton in Moapa Valley and about 65 miles northeast of Las Vegas, earlier that morning, Nevada State Police said.

Several hikers who reported seeing the women begin their hike alerted authorities when they noticed the pair had not returned.

Why in the world would you go hiking in this kind of weather?

I wonder what time they left?

@gotbeer you may have a hiking partner to hook up with that will feed you for the hike. Joe did Taco Tuesday up in the hills yesterday but admitted it was really hot out and he was dragging feet going down the trail. Please keep him hydrated, there is not many good bakers in San Dimas.

IMG_2626.jpegI think I’ve mentioned before that I have a few trail cams near my house in Big Bear.  Well with the recent warm weather, the wildlife activity around my house has really picked up this last week.  Caught a few cats, and a bear behind my house.  IMG_2623.jpeg

They both look nice and fat.  It's been a good summer.  Surprised no tags on the bear, or collar on the cat.  And cats are territorial, so might be the same cat.

It is the same cat @gotbeer.  She has a young cat also.  She’s a mama.  I have a shot of her hauling off with a possum she foundIMG_2628.jpeg

Hiked Mt. Wilson yesterday.  It was a nice hike going up.  Nice and cool.  A bit chilly on top.  On the way down though, the furnace was lit.  It was hot.  Anyways, nice to see the little streams all alive and flowing.

tequilla, or smog sunrise.

Little waterfall down in one of the gulches.

Santa Anita.

San Gabriel Peak (far right), Markham peak (flat one), Mt. Lowe (middle of screen)

Old pumping station or something like that.  Might have been a flood control gate.

So this part of the trail looked like it got washed out over the winters storms.  The trail maintenance volunteers did a great job and put up this little bridge.  Not scetchy yet, but it probably eventually will be.

Ontario Peak.  Beautiful day to hike.  Especially for mid September.  I was in a long sleeve the entire hike.

Waterfall, about 1 1/3 miles in.  Never seen this one flowing before, and that it's flowing in September is pretty amazing.

A view of Mt. San Antonio, aka Mt. Baldy.

Not sure what kind of berries there are, but there were a lot of them.  Bears are getting lazy in the foothills.

20230916_095451.jpg

Foggy in the lowlands, islands in the mountains.

A close up view of Mt. San Antoino, aka Mt. Baldy.  If you look closely at the bottom right of the photo, you can see what is called the Ski Hut, it's a small green building.  It's located right at the Bottom of the Baldy Bowl.  Supposedly it's rentable.  Although you have to carry all supplies up to it.

20230916_103023.jpg

Flowers were also blooming.

More berries that the lazy bears aren't eating.

Great pics of Mt. Baldy @gotbeer.  Hiked many times up there when I was living in Upland.  What a great, clear day that was.
