Most disappointing and most unappreciated Angels player so far in 2017?

Recommended Posts

Most disappointing: Calhoun

He still plays terrific defense in left field but his hitting has been super atrocious so far this season. Has a .212/.289/.328 slash line in over 200 plate appearances now. Pretty shocking to see because you would expect Calhoun to hit and see a lot of fastball since Trout is hitting behind him. But he's looked lost at the plate,

Most Unappreciated: Maldonado

Does not get enough credit to me but he's been outstanding defensively behind the plate, calls a good game, and seems to throw out would-be-base stealers every time they run on him. Offense not too bad either for a catcher.

Agree on Calhoun being the most disappointing. I have no idea what his problem is but it's getting annoying. The offense needs him, badly. The good news is his BABIP indicates some bad luck, so hopefully he should turn it around.

The most underappreciated is definitely Bud Norris. He's stepped up big time in the closer role, and I think we all cringed when he was made the defacto closer when Bedrosian got hurt.

There's a lot of underrated players on this team. With the injuries we've had, this team should've been sunk already. But because of different guys stepping up, we are staying afloat.

1. Martin Maldonado - If anyone was wondering just how much of a difference a catcher makes in the outcome of a game, watch Maldonado catch. Throwing behind runners, keepingbthem honest, gunning thieves, turning balls into strikes, keeping pitchers calm, working efficiently, getting timely hits, moving runners over..

2. Andrelton Simmons - If the media understood even half the value of run prevention, Simmons would get as much print as any SS in the game.

3. Cameron Maybin - Not to take sides in IP and CZ's argument, but Maybin is the 16th best OF in baseball, and looks like our new leadoff hitter. Getting someone on in front of Trout and being part of what may be  the best defensive OF unit in baseball is huge. Eppler knew what he was doing...

4. Bud Norris/Yusmeiro Petit/Blake Parker/Jose Alvarez - It's a lot easier to win ball games when you can protect a lead. It's actually comical to think of everything Dipoto tried to do to build a good bullpen, and Eppler builds a better one with guys off the scrap heap than Jerry ever could.

5. JC Ramirez - We turned a long reliever into our staff ace and by all measures, a very solid #2/3 starter. Who does that?

6. Mike Trout - Yeah, he gets a lot of love from the media. But he's currently on pace for the greatest statistical season in the modern era that wasn't tainted by steroids. 12-win season?

Most disappointing has to be Calhoun, followed by all of the injuries and Valbuena.   Valbuena has never had a great BA (decent OBP though), but has never truly gotten started yet.

Under appreciated is Maldonado, maybe followed so far this season by Sosh.   He has had to do a lot of juggling.   It resembles the job he did in 2015.

Biggest surprise may well be Ramirez.   He was solid enough in the pen a year ago, but who truly expected this semi-breakout in the rotation?   Followed by the unexpected successes so far from the makeshift bullpen.

Don't remember Calhoun in left.

So many players have had disappointing years so far: Richards, Skaggs, Bedrosian, Bailey, Cron, Calhoun, Pujols, Marte, Espinosa. All things tolled, it has to be Richards. But in terms of performance on the field, Calhoun. He was supposed to be the guy who we can could say, "OK, no second star but at least Kole is an impact player/borderline star." Dude has sucked.

The pleasant surprises have been Ramirez, Maldonado, and several relievers - most notably Parker, Norris, Petit, and Hernandez -- all new this year. Eppler did well.

Can't really call Skaggs, Bedrosian, Bailey, Cron, Marte and Pujols a disappointment.  They have never really been anything special other than Pujols and Bailey but they are very washed up, plus Skaggs who never performed since his surgery.

Calhoun has to be the biggest disappointment, he has been so bad he really shouldn't even be in the lineup anymore.

I'm going to go ahead and lump everyone together.

The offense has had been a huge disappointment. It's atrocious right now. Angels have always started off slow under Scioscia but this is just awful. I can't even watch. I have no faith in anyone on the team. Was hoping to get big years from Marte and Cron and they've done nothing.

Underrated is the entire pitching staff. All our best starters are hurt and the 3 back end bullpen guys. It's insane they still keep us in games. Too bad the offense can't come through
