What bothers you the most: the offense or pitching?

Recommended Posts

According to the latest OC podcast, the hosts believe Nava should get some time to get acclimated while allowing Ortega to hit regularly in AAA. Then they both could be assessed at the same time. I guess it makes sense, but should we give Gia and Cron the same leeway?

It seems to me that offense covers more weaknesses than pitching. Even our mediocre pitching isn't atrocious. We should not get swept by Tampa Bay at home when we were in all three games.

ERA+ 97

OPS+ 95.    Basically just weak all around and boring all the time.

I think pitching bothers me the most.  You have to believe the offense will come around at some point but the starting rotation is basically nonexistent.

Why do you have to believe the offense will come around?  There's so little talent there (oh--other than the lack of strikeouts!  Wheeeeeee...) that it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if the offense struggled all season.

What bothers me the most is we are so damn boring.  So I guess that answer would be the same as saying offense.  We have nothing to be excited about on this team outside of Trout.  I miss the days of frenzied hitting, stolen bases, hit and runs and a lights out bullpen.

At least the bullpen (outside of Smith) has been rock solid.    But yeah, the Royals style of play is fun to watch.    It sure was out here in the 2000s.

Now we have several GIDP specialists.

Offense because mediocre would be an upgrade at this point. The rate of GIDP shows that they have no idea what to do with an off speed pitch on the outer half of the plate.

I mentioned GIDPs the other day. Pujols is currently the active leader in GIDPs with 319. That's over 60 more than the runner up, ARod. Add Escobar to the mix who lead the National League in GIDPs last year and is currently tied in MLB this year with 8 and it is a recipe for disaster. It's a huge hole in Scioscia's station to station style of offense.

In other words, it sucks.

Simple question, what's harder to find these days, good offense of good pitching?

The offense bugs me more. There are so many options for pitching out there that we can simply get by in that arena. But offensively, finding a good #2 hitter for LF, or 2B or Albert's replacement at 1B....those aren't common commodities.

And when the franchise has brought in position players from elsewhere this decade, they have mainly either flamed out (especially Wells, Hackilton)

or underachieved (especially Pujols).   And Angel Stadium isn't that hard of a place to hit in.

The question was which one bothers me the most.

Thing is, it is a hard place to hit.   Pujols legs disappearing and taking his bat with them was avoidable, some might argue predictable, but whatever.  But guys like Hamilton were just bad fits for the park to begin with.   This is one area where advanced stats should help them and they haven't seemingly put enough time into.  Hopefully that changes under Eppler.  But I think you hit the nail on the head when you hint at them developing their own bats...   Hopefully they take a more balanced approach to the draft in future years.
