Juan Uribe signs with Cleveland

If the Angels did offer Freese a contract, he and his agent sure overestimated his market badly. Reminds me of the time the Dodgers offered Jody Reed a 3 year contract in the 7.5 million total range and he ended up signing with the Brewers for 1 year at $450,000. Both Freese and Uribe are similar in that SABR geeks think they're average at best, but their teams always seem to win more games when they're in the lineup.

Angels with Freese in the starting lineup: 146-100

Angels without Freese in the starting lineup 37-41.

We have Pennington, Cowart and Kubitza behind Escobar. Plenty of 3B depth. What you're really looking at here is Freese vs Giavotella.

Freese at 3B and Escobar at 2B is likely worth 4 wins.

Escobar at 3B and Giavotella at 2B is likely worth 3 wins.

So Freese gets us one more win. Now there's some debate over what a win is worth, but the general consensus is approximately 8 million. So Freese has an 8 million dollar value to the Angels. But they're by most reports, about 4 million under the tax. Then you have to consider what it means to block both Cowart and Kubitza for another year. That might be worth a couple million on its own.

So basically in order to make this worth it for the Angels, Freese has to literally sign for only 3 million, the same that Mat Latos got. Go ahead and offer that, but I doubt Freese gets off the couch for it.

Then we also must consider, are we so close to the playoffs that one win is worth blocking young talent for? We're also taking the risk that either or possibly both Kubitza and Cowart are ready to provide value in the majors immediately, in which case you'd have spent the money on Freese for no reason.

There just is not a fit in Anaheim. At least not logically.

Freese has exactly zero options now.

1/5.  Move escobar to 2b.

or.........put freese in LF.  just kidding.  sort of.

If we can get him back while staying under the cap, we absolutely should do it.

Just shows how ludicrous it was that we spent all that money acquiring unnecessary bench and shit platoon pieces that actually now might stop us from signing Freese while staying under the cap.

Freese gets us 1 win

Didn't we miss the WC spot last year by a game?

He gets us a lot more than one win if he starts at least 120 games. WAR doesn't work with guys like Freese. The discrepancy in the quality of play when he was in or out of the lineup here has to be more than just coincidence.

If the Angels signed Freeze, Cowart would be on the 25 man roster as a defensive replacement for and to rest Freeze. If an agreement could be made with Arte that the Budget would be under the tax by the end of the season, it would definitely make sense to sign Freeze for one year.
