Taliban Attack Pakistan School

From Wikipedia re: "spic":

"Some in the United States believe that the word is a play on their pronunciation of the English "speak." The Oxford English Dictionary takes spic to be a contraction of the earlier form spiggoty. The oldest known use of "spiggoty" is in 1910 by Wilbur Lawton in Boy Aviators in Nicaragua, or, In League with the Insurgents. Stuart Berg Flexner, in I hear America Talking (1976), favored the explanation that it derives from "no spik Ingles" (or "no spika de Ingles"). These theories follow standard naming practices, which include attacking people according to the foods they eat (see Kraut and Frog) and for their failure to speak a language (see Barbarian and Gringo)."

Sorry.

It's used as a slur to Hispanics but you're right, it's not short for.

I don't believe your apology was sincere.

Other than the typical "Islam is peace, but kill everybody" logic, I thought it was interesting that Pakistan seemed to come-out and DEFEND the Paki-taliban, saying jot was "out-of-towner" talibananas...

Also, it is curiously following the current plot of "Homeland" (tho loosely).  Maybe the Pakis will finally grow a backbone against terror.

I can't fathom how other cultures regard us as ignorant.

Every culture/nation/group/people has their own prejudices. Just look at the Asians....the Koreans hate the Chinese, the Vietnamese hate the Koreans, and they ALL hate the Japanese. The middle east is the same way. And I am guessing the French and Polish don't love Germans just yet.

Americans are probably less "ignorant" and more tolerant than most other peoples of the world.

This is more correct than not.  Americans are certainly more cautious about what they say (or at least, who they say what to).  And you will find Americans calling each other out on perceived racial slights more often and more guardedly (and regrettably, more self-righteously, at times) than any other country on the earths.

This forum is proof of that.
