A's trade 3B Josh Donaldson to Blue Jays for Brett Lawrie, other pieces

Looks like the A's got a lot of talent in return. If you believe Donaldson's last two years have been somewhat of a fluke, this looks like a great trade for the A's.

Nolin is a nice backend starter type...so he'll turn into a stud for the A's somehow

 

the main return for them other than Lawrie is the SS prospect, Barreto. A's finding a replacement at SS long term after they traded Russell away in the Samardzija deal last summer.

Franklin Barreto looks awesome - 18 years old and he hit .311/.384/.481 in low-A. Talk about a serious Rondon.

Kendall Graveman looks like he's major league ready and has talent.

 

Brett Lawrie is a former stud prospect who is young enough (25) to turn it around.

 

Sean Nolin is a solid prospect.

 

So the A's got a shortstop prospect with a lot of upside, two major league ready 24- year old starting pitchers, and a young third baseman with lots of potential that could turn it around. Nice haul.

 

That said, Josh Donaldson is very good.

How did Oakland not receive a top prospect like Norris or Pompey in the deal?

Lawrie is a bust

Graveman = Nick Tropeano

Nolin is a solid prospect, who projects as a mid-rotation starter

Barreto is years away, but has the most upside of the group.

The package isn't terrible, but I expected Toronto to include more quality prospects like Pompey, Norris or Stroman.

Franklin Barreto is a natural hitter. Quick hands, compact stroke, knack for the barrel. Good speed, but not a shortstop. 2B/CF most likely.

Beane gets Billy Butler for 3/30, then he ships out their best player. If it was any other GM, he'd get totally blasted for this kind of move.
