Season 1 of Deadwood was some of the most enjoyable TV I've ever seen. On the other hand, I found season 2 to be mostly dull and uninteresting. I have yet to see season 3... I've heard it's another step down.

i like american restoration from the history channel. the work they do is incredible.

 

if you want some lighter fare, castle is a good (and fairly typical) detective show. main characters are fun.

If you like nature documentaries I suggest you watch Planet Earth

I purchased the blu-ray awhile back, and it is by far the best nature series I've ever watched. It's also narrated by Sir David Attenborough. I have no idea why Discovery Channel had Sigourney Weaver narrate the U.S. version, but Attenborough version >>> Weavers.

I've never seen The Universe but I'll second Blue Planet. It doesn't matter how many times I've seen those series, if Blue Planet or Planet Earth is on I'm sitting there and watching that shit.

Yeah Planet Earth is great.

 

If you have BBC America then every Tuesday they do nature or earth night or something.  They do Planet Earth, Angry Planet, Human Planet, etc.  I discovered a couple more I didn't know about that are awesome.
