Yesterday was a sad day for me, as one of my heroes, and a great inspiration to millions passed away with little notice. Louis Zamperini ran the 5,000 meter race in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, and even though he didn't medal, he ran his last lap in 56 seconds. He joined the Army Air Corps as a bombardier on the B-24 Liberator and flew for 2 years before his plane went down in the middle of the Pacific. He and 2 others were the only survivors ando he endured 47 days in a life raft before being captured by the Japanese.

He spent 2 years in a POW camp, and the Japanese knew he was famous. They tortured him and beat him every day before the war finally ended.

His life story is written in a book called "Unbroken" which is also going to be a movie directed by Angelina Jolie, coming out in December. I urge you to read the book, and see the movie. It's one of my all time favorite books, and a huge inspiration.

He came to our school several years ago and spoke for an assembly. What a tremendous story his was. He shook hands with Hitler after his race.

His son was a member of the band ELO, iirc.

I dont come to this side of the forum often but was wondering if anyone had mentioned it.

Guy led an incredible life. He literally lived a 'movie life' (which I cant wait to see). Tried to go hear him speak once but couldnt miss work.

Huge fan of that generation. Sadly there arent many left.

We hired him to speak at a work event a few years ago so I got the honor of meeting him and chatting with him for a while. He was an incredible human being and I am glad I got to meet him.
