LA Times: Padded caps for pitchers to be available in spring training

Recommended Posts

MLB has approved the protective cap, which will be used on a voluntary basis in the majors and minors. The protective lining adds seven ounces of weight to the cap.

Would you wear a heavier and perhaps clunkier cap if it might help protect you from a line drive to the head?

I would. Wearing a batting helmet isn't practical, and the pitcher is closer to the hitter than any player on the diamond save the catcher (and anything coming the catcher's way is generally going to be a foul tip rather than anything squared up and hammered). Of course, I wonder how much extra protection it would offer.
