LA Times: Padded caps for pitchers to be available in spring training

MLB has approved the protective cap, which will be used on a voluntary basis in the majors and minors. I would. Wearing a batting helmet isn't practical, and the pitcher is closer to the hitter than any player on the diamond save the catcher (and anything coming the catcher's way is generally going to be a foul tip rather than anything squared up and hammered). Of course, I wonder how much extra protection it would offer.

True - and it seems like that is where most line drives back to the mound wind up.

They will just need to learn to turn their heads quicker. I'm sure that will be on a safety label on the inside of the cap.

Anything is better than what they have now.  

 

Of course the protection rating on the caps are something like 80 or 90 mph.  But again, it's better than being protected by wool.

I absolutely would. It's terrifying to see the whiplash pitchers get when getting smacked in the dome by a baseball that could be traveling more than 100 mph.
