That is what the local newscasts are calling it here. Starting later today, the temps here in the Twin Cities are going to drop below zero, somewhere around 5pm. They will remain below zero until Wednesday afternoon! Sunday night/Monday morning, the temps are supposed to be -27. That doesn't even factor in the wind chill which will be closing in on -50! I have a heated garage here at home so I'm good there. However, I'm supposed to go to work on Monday when the high will be -16. Hoping my car will start after sitting in an open parking structure for 8 hours.

I know that Nate is in Wisconsin and someone else on this site is just north of here in Canada. Wondering how stupid cold it will be for you guys. I definitely need to plan vacations in January.

I have a friend in Winnipeg who told me it was -31 two days ago (before wind chill) It was actually colder there than it was on Mars at the exact same time. Amazing.

Tomorrow we will have a high of -27 degrees and lows into the -40's.

It's basically just stupid cold at that point.  Things start not wanting to work right at that point.

When it is that cold, I just figure stay in the house if you can and if it's a work day, pray your car starts.

Wonder how bad the conditions will be for the SF/Packers game on Sunday.  Ice Bowl II.

They just mentioned on the news temperatures of -4 in Atlanta, without windchill.  That's just crazy.

Even my cousins' area in Newfoundland has recently had lows below zero, which is highly unusual for them. They get a lot of fog and snow, but not usually the bitterly cold temperatures that interior Canada gets.

I saw people on the news plugging in engine warmers so their car would start.

Being born and raised in SoCal I had never heard of such a device.

I haven't heard of these engine warmers out here, but remote starters are big here. Even owners of older model vehicles get them installed for $250+

I've had my car 10 years and don't want to pay that much to have it installed if I'm not sure how much longer I will keep it.

Sunday night low is -22 and Monday has a high of -15 and low of -23.  Insane.  Supposed to be windy Monday too.

They aren't hard to install. You remove a plug in the engine block and it just screws in. The particular engine you have determines exactly where it fits, and that information is readily available online. Block heaters aren't expensive. They have a three-pronged plug on them that plugs directly into a heavy duty extension cord. The element warms the coolant in the engine block. I owned a 1982 Peugeot 505S turbodiesel when I lived in Oklahoma, and if the temperature dropped below about 25 degrees it was a bear to start without plugging in the block heater.

It gets that cold in Montana every year though.

At least when I lived there for two winters, it got that cold all the time.

I use to have a 73 Dodge Challenger, and I would use a warmer that went in where the oil dipstick goes. It would plug into a 3 prong outlet also.

My wife every now and then asks about moving to_______ (a few places much further north). Then she wonders why I don't take her ideas seriously.

Maybe, my new go to line should be, " Yeah, let's move to Mars."

It was 34 here yesterday morning. This morning... -14. It will be -28 when I go to work tomorrow morning.

The answer to making sure your car works without a remote starter or engine heaters is to go outside and start your car every couple hours. That will be fun.
