Buck Showalter interested in Angels managerial job

I'd love Showalter but the manager isn't the most important this offseason. Is it possible to table this until we know if Shohei is returning? With Shohei, I think Showalter is the right fit since the club will be in win-now mode. If Shohei goes, I think the whole dynamic of the club changes. They may still be in win-now but it will be different, if that makes sense. We would need to get free agents to replace him. In that vein, winning may be realistically longer and I'd be more inclined to choose a manager who isn't as seasoned as Showalter.

table the decision on a manager so we can wait for Ohtani to officially leave?

great idea.

why don't we wait until August to sign free agents too, just to see whether or not the team is competitive?

I am ok with Buck as long as he can bring in his own staff. I want no hold overs

an interesting thing about bringing back Buck is that he poached Dom Chiti from the Angels to be his bullpen coach last year. The two worked together in Baltimore.

So perhaps Chiti could end up back on the Angels coaching staff.

I'm going to go on record and say that if they hire Buck, it means that better candidates just weren't interested and the Angels are settling.  Just my opinion.

Managerial jobs aren't bountiful. There will be plenty of interest.

There will be quality.

I hope so. I just have my doubts.

Why would one want to hire a manager that only wants a "cush" job? If said managerial candidate isn't interested in the Halos gig due to perceived "challenges", I would say they arent much of a candidate in the first place.

It's more about not wanting to walk into a sh!t show.  "Challenges" is putting it nicely.  The Angels have serious organizational issues.  Poor infrastructure, poor culture, etc.

One thing you can say about Buck is that he has experienced every challenge possible. Bad owners. Bad GM's. Bad teams. Bad organizations. However, every single place he's managed, the team has been very good in either the first, or second year he was there.

That is not true. Texas he never got them past 3rd in their division. Baltimore he finished 5th his first two years and 5th his last two. Given a talented team he does well. But he isn't any miracle worker.

No manager is.

Especially these days when it's a team of smart people strategizing, not one old guy going by his gut.

Define "going by his gut".

Nit aware of any manager that doesn't have pregame consultations with the entire staff including analytics guys and (if present) the gm.

Once the game starts, for pitching decisions, most managers consult various metrics such as velocity, how hitters are squaring up, last at bats, along with input from catcher.
