Gretzky is "The Great One" for a reason. While he only has four Stanley Cup titles, he owns every NHL scoring record. Gretzky has the most goals (894), assists (1,963) and points (2,857) in NHL history -- winning a record nine Hart trophies as league MVP. He leads the NHL in assists per game (1.32) and points per game (1.92) -- while having the most hat tricks (50), even-strength goals (617), and short-handed goals (73).

Kelly Slater. 11-time world surfing champ which is 7 more than the next. At 50, he's still competing at the highest level against others more than 1/2 his age. 

 

Oh, and Joey Chestnut.

Hard to say with different eras and modern athletes who may be capable of competing at the highest level in other sports.  Jim Thorpe and Jackie Robinson were truly great athletes who competed and succeeded in multiple sports but in different eras.  Bo Jackson athletically was about as gifted as they come but his career was cut short by a freak injury that was in part due to his athleticism.

Most accomplished or greatest athlete?  There's a difference.

To me "greatest athlete" is not about titles or records...

For that reason, I'd say Bo Jackson.
