Huberdeau and Weegar are both UFA's after this next season.  So I don't know who won this trade.  Florida did give up a lot, but maybe they had a feel that both were going to test UFA?  Interestingly, both players are from Canada.  So maybe Calgary is hoping they will stay.  Which would put a big win to Calgary.

Calgary had to try to compete this year and maybe those 2 like the 8th year they could get.

Florida was going to run into cap problems and also figured out what the Avs figured out last year. You win in the playoffs with forecheck and 2 way play and Tkachuk makes up for losing Duclair to the achilles injury

Kadri as a 2C and Klingberg as a 2nd pair D and both not young only make sense for a team that is a true Cup contender and those teams have to clear space to made the signing. The cap space teams, including the Ducks should be looking at what expiring deals they can get from the big boys that would probably have draft or prospect tacked on now and make for flip currency at the deadline

Lol.

Klingberg then.

What is John Klingberg worth in trade and on a contract extension?

Quote

According to Marek, Klingberg's camp was seeking something in the range of an eight-year deal and $63 million -- which comes out to a $7.875 million AAV. In the wacky world of the NHL defencemen market, that rate actually comes off as somewhat reasonable -- especially if a new team will elevate him back to top-pair workload.

Klingberg now.

With John Klingberg reportedly looking for around $6mil AAV over 7 years, he now has a new agent to help him find a deal. @JamisonCoyle | @Rupper17 | #NHLTonight https://t.co/KKpLOU4ZKc

And I don't know if anyone will give him that.

Kevin Weekes tweeted the ducks are about to sigh Klingberg to a 1 year contract.

Didn't see that coming.  That's a good signing for the Ducks.  Although his D is pretty suspect.  But as a RHD, hopefully it's a good fit with Fowler.  At least it's a veteran fit.

Just Make a Trade? Penguins Among Many OVER the Cap

Quote

Their cap space is a rare and sought-after commodity, like water and gasoline on Fury Road, cigarettes in prison, or intelligence in politics.

The Carolina Hurricanes were able to snag Max Pacioretty and Dylan Coghlan for nothing. Carolina actually acquired a fairly paid, high-level top-line center for nothing because the Vegas Golden Knights were in a cap crunch.

Or will the bottom teams simply demand better players to the exclusion of being paid to accept expendable players — like the league, and Carolina did to Vegas.

Sounds good for the Ducks, if they go that direction.

Rumors are that the Islanders and Kadri are close.  But the Islanders don't have the cap space to sign him, and nobody will help them free that space up.  lol

Currently Cap Friendly has them at a space of $11 million.  But they only have 19/23 signed.  Three RFA's still to be signed, including Dobson who just had a 51 pt season as a RHD.  They only have 4 defensemen signed.

This is the hold up with a lot of things. Teams like the Ducks, Sabres, and Yotes will eventually help the contenders launder some money so they can sign the FAs they want or deal with their RFAs

It would be funny if they don't.

Those teams are eventually gonna own every pick in the first 2 rounds of the draft

Do you think the Ducks may regret tying so much up in Klingberg?

Of course it's early. They only have to wait until Jan 1. Then they can flip him and use half the cap money to do another deal.
