Buster Posey

Hate the Giants, but Posey has always been class.  I just think it's good that he goes out on his term, and not like a 48 year old piece of Poo.  Hall of Fame is questionable, but at least he isn't chasing converting to first or going to a DH team chasing the numbers.  From articles I've read, health is a major issue with a few concussions and his body breaking down.  But man he has the hardware in the trophy case.

I'd like to hear what @Jeff Fletcher thinks about Posey's HOF chances.  I think he has a vote doesn't he?

“I think HE GETS IN.”

I wish more people looked at it like a museum choosing to feature a particular player (with the player subsequently feeling personally rewarded) rather than it being a personal award TO the player.

It seems like we would end up with a better Hall of Fame if we stuck with this mental discipline rather than sometimes being focused on rewarding or depriving the player personally.

With Pete Rose and some in the steroid era, the entire subject is way too entrenched in the narrow slice of either providing or depriving the player personally of the satisfaction, rather than trying to get the historical accuracy correct.

(this post not directed AT arch, just seemed to “fit” here)

I am a HOF voter.

And I have just glanced at his numbers a few times in the past couple days, and I think I would probably vote for him. I tend to prefer guys who played at high level for a short time over guys who played at a lower level but for longer (I never voted for Craig Biggio, for example.) However, I'm not sure a lot of my colleagues feel that way. I think a lot of people will give him a lot of credit for 3 WS titles. That's certainly something that should help him in the eyes of anyone who wants to ding him for lack of volume.

I would think that by the JAWS measurement, he gets in. His prime years were excellent.

Posey was a great player.  But I can’t feel comfortable saying he was one of the greatest players of all time.

If I owed a museum designed to present to the public “the greatest players of all time,” I would not be including Buster Posey in the museum.

With that very simplified analysis, I say he is not a HOF player.

He's only one of 3 catchers to win an MVP.  Carter and Josh Gibson were the other two.  So even guys like Bench and Berra never got one.  Not that I would use that as something overly significant, but others might.

Huh?  Where are you getting that?  Bench won MVP in '70 and '72.  Berra won 3.  Roy Campanella won 3.  Cochrane won 2. Mauer, Pudge Rodriguez, Lombardi, and Hartnett also won MVP.

Plus he's got one of those classic baseball names. Right up there with Lefty Grove and Goose Gossage.

Funny, FiveThirtyEight's headline article today is about this same question.

Thanks for posting this.  Because when thinking of the 3 WS championships of the Giants.  The only name that came to mind was that Posey was on them.  Couldn't think of any others.  And from that list, I can see why.
