He wasn't mediocre, just rarely risked injury from diving for the ball. See Erstad's injuries he 3 or 4 seasons cut short by diving after balls and running into fences.

He probably wouldn't be in the bigs in a normal year....needed more AAA time...downside in continuing to play him is you have to hope his confidence doesn’t take a hit...

He did dive in a critical 9th inning in game 3 of the 2002 ALCS, to help preserve a 2-1 win.
