You know how everyone here wants the Angels to decline Calhoun's option and hand RF over to Adell in 2020?

This would be the best way to start that process. Trade Goodwin, promote Adell, get him on the job experience in August and September.

Decide on Kole after the WS. Clearer idea then if Adell is ready if we've seen him for two months.

I think trading Goodwin makes it harder to let Like go. I'd prefer an experienced 4th outfielder and primary back up to Adell if Kole is gone.

Oh dang.

Kyle Muller?

Jesus Christ - here's the Braves AAA SPs, according to Roster Resource, and their Top 30 Prospect ranking on MLB.com

  • Mike Foltynewicz: 4.10 ERA in 9 GS
  • Kyle Wright (#2): 4.83 ERA in 15 GS
  • Touki Toussaint (#6): 5.40 ERA in 4 GS
  • Bryse Wilson (#7): 3.98 ERA in 17 GS
  • Luis Gohara (#10): injured
  • Kolby Allard (#11): 4.17 ERA in 20 GS
  • Patrick Weigel (#19): 3.21 ERA in 13 G/10 GS
  • and reliever Thomas Burrows, (#18):

And here's their AA rotation:

  • Ian Anderson (#3): 2.66 ERA in 20 GS
  • Joey Wentz (#12): 4.72 ERA in 20 GS
  • Kyle Muller (#13): 3.14 ERA in 21 GS
  • Tucker Davidson (#22): 2.01 ERA in 19 GS
  • Jasseel De La Cruz (#27): 3.29 ERA in 19 G/18 GS

Think they have enough pitching? Here's A+ just because.

  • Tristan Beck (#16): 5.32 ERA in 10 GS
  • Freddy Tarnok (#17): 5.17 ERA in 18 G/17 GS

Their MLB rotation is Soroka, Fried, Gausman, Keuchel, and Teheran, with Newcomb in the pen.

Thirteen starters in their Top 30.

They should do this with Marsh, not Adell. Once Adell comes up he should be starting every day.

Toussaint might be a great buy low opportunity. Not sure how far he's fallen in the eyes of the Braves. He was killer last year and just fell off a cliff this year.

Trading Goodwin wouldn’t shed any salary, he’s not even to arbitration yet...Bour  and Lucroy a little, if anybody would take them....Cahill would be a bigger dump if you could get somebody to eat his salary.....but I don’t think he’s had enough time to establish (or re-establish) himself as a reliever for that....I’d just keep him...

That's why I didn't include Goodwin in the salary part - only Bour, Cahill, and Lucroy. Cahill's maybe only owed another $2.5-$3m on the year...not hard at all to see a team taking that money on to have him eat up some innings if their pen is being overworked.

Surely they're gonna be a 40-man crunch with all these arms in AA/AAA too. I'd take really any of them for Goodwin, and would consider it a steal, considering we grabbed the guy off of waivers.

I mentioned this is the Official Trade Deadline thread, but there's potential the Angels can trade off a couple of Bour, Cahill, Goodwin, and any of their catchers. All have a certain skill desired by contending teams.
All have actually performed well recently too.

  • Justin Bour, who's hit .299/.417/.694/1.111 in AAA/MLB since his initial demotion, swatting 14 HR in 40 games, drawing 28 walks against 29 strikeouts.
  • Depending on how the Angels pitching buying goes, Trevor Cahill, who has a 3.86 ERA since his bullpen demotion, striking out 16 in 18.2 IP....
  • Almost certainly, Kevan Smith or Dustin Garneau are being shopped, as both are out of options and one will be cut loose when Lucroy returns. Teams always need catching for the stretch run, and our recent acquisitions of Thole and Bemboom hint that Eppler coupld be prepping to deal one.
  • For that same reason, Jonathan Lucroy could also be getting some calls.
  • ...or even Brian Goodwin, who cooled in May, has righted the ship, hitting .293/.333/.511/.844 over his last 99 plate appearances, ranging from 5/29 to 7/28.

No, the Angels probably won't get much of anything too valuable in return, but they might be able to shed salary, especially in the cases of Cahill, Bour, and Lucroy, which could make it easier for them to take back salary for a SP in a trade, such as Greinke.
And maybe they get middling prospects - Eppler has done a good job scouting out reclamation prospects. That depth could make it easier to deal from A/A+ arms or AAA bats.

Yes please.

Lol I’m not debating that he could bring more then Calhoun.  He probably could.  But that doesn’t mean he’ll bring a worthwhile return himself.  What are we thinking he’s going to get for us ?

The Angels have a need for Brian Goodwin.  You’re losing more paying Calhoun when you don’t have to or depending on Michael Hermosillo if they don’t pay Calhoun.

Are we sellers or are we buyers ? Goodwin is a guy you get rid of if you don’t think you’re going to be competing.  I thought most of us agree that the Angels should be competing now and especially next year and beyond.

Agreed

I would be surprised if anybody would take on Cahill’s salary but we’ll see...I’d be reallly surprised if anybody took on Bour...

Upton is the new Albert

I’m saying that moving Justin Upton right now would be the perfect time. We are not making the playoffs. We traded for Upton to help us make a playoff run two years ago. We haven’t made the playoffs. The useful Upton window is starting to close. He is starting to get hit by the injury bug. Yes he’s Justin Upton and not JB Shuck but his salary could be reallocated to pitching. We have Adell, Trout, Goodwin and what seems to be a rejuvenated Calhoun. Upton’s defense is not very good. His clutch numbers have taken a dip. I couldn’t think of a better time to trade him and his contract to clear the way for the future.
