Leroy Stanton R.I.P.

Sad news from S. Carolina. Former Angels outfielder Leroy Stanton (1972-76) was killed in a auto accident Wednesday. A good friend to those who knew him and a fine ballplayer.

I remember Stanton.  He played on some bad teams during his time with the Angels.

People forget that we not only stole Nolan Ryan in the Fregosi trade with the Mets but we also got Stanton....a very solid OF'er for a number of years....very sad....

Doing okay Chuck. I was down in Tempe last Sunday signing books. Didn’t see any Angelwin folks.  Feel bad about Leroy. He was a good friend and a great person. How you doing?

Very sad news.

Stanton was one of my favorites back then.  As a kid it was interesting to drive home from the game and see a city named after one of the players on your team.

Hard to tell but it sounds like he perhaps had a medical emergency, perhaps a heart attack or stroke...

It was single vehicle. Leroy was a former professional trucker and a good driver. He was probably dozing off or suffered some kind of stroke. He veered off the highway and struck a tree. Unfortunately he was not wearing his seat belt. Tragic. He was a class act and a good ball player. Did well with Seattle after he left Angels and played a year in Japan.

stanton and bob oliver were the two big bats for a couple of years. i remember stanton as a really strong person who hit the ball hard. sorry to hear of his passing.

I remember watching both of them as a kid.

Rest in peace, Mr. Stanton. You were a competent major leaguer on some Angels teams that never quite had enough of those.

You saved your best season for the Mariners, but that's all right, too.

Sad to hear. I remember Stanton from my days as a kid listening to ballgames on the radio with my dad.

 

On a side note, I have purchased, read, and still own Once They Were Angels. It still sits on my bookcase.

How would that help a USC graduate, except at bedtime?
