This is just to test the flaps and landing capabilities. The final product will have a booster (middle of the picture).

@Lhalo   Ok, that makes more sense.   It just looked like it was too fat to be a rocket.  That it's just the top part would make it look a lot more proportional.

They gave it a 1/3 chance it would land. The mission was a success. 

SN9 is pretty much read to go. We may even see it launch before the end of the year.

That's a pretty low bar for engineering, designing something that only had a 33% chance of success.

As much as I like to bag on Space X, and when the space race started I had my doubts.  They have been the one that has been the most consistent of the group.  They have failures, but they seem to bounce back from them real quick.  If it's a space race among private industry, they are at the halfway point of the marathon, while most are at mile 1.  

Meanwhile, here is an example of I have no idea what their direction is.
