Mock Line Ups

With the additions of Cozart and Kinsler lets see what you think (I know we have a ton of these types of threads...just couldnt find one)

1. Kinsler - 2B

2. Cozart - 3B (545 Ab's over the last 3 years with a .344 OBP in the two spot)

3. Trout - CF

4. Upton - LF

5. AP - 1B/DH

6. Ohtani/Valbuena - DH/1B

7. Calhoun - RF

8. Simmons - SS

9. Maldanado - C

If Simmons hits like he did last year then he should hit no further down than 5-6.  Hopefully AP is buried in the lineup.

If/when Valbuena hits, it will probably be elsewhere in the lineup to avoid the two lefties hitting next to each other. Also, I still expect some Cron time.

I prefer Trout batting 2nd, but I also like Trout on first with Kole up to bat, because they have to hold on Trout and opens up the right side for Kole, plus he would see more fast balls.

I don’t hate Albert and I don’t hate Scioscia, but do you really think Albert was the analytical choice to bat 3rd or 4th last year?  There is really no chance analytics played a huge role in creating the line up last year.

With Albert offering nothing as a hitter other than the occasional HR, he'd be better off hitting 7th where that 30 HR power and nothing else stands out more. That said, we know he's not hitting any lower than 5th.

Trout's high OBP opens the right side of the infield for a lefty hitter is one reason.

Plus, many analytics say that your best hitters should actually be at 1,2,and 4 before 3.

This is probably the most ideal lineup but I suspect we will probably see Pujols batting 5-6 most of the time unless Simmons repeats and Ohtani proves to hit as well as he did in Japan.

Totally agree on 1-4

I think we can see AP at #5 and everyone else slot down one spot.

It doesnt make a lot of sense to have such a high OBP guy like Trout at #3. He will come up too much with 2 out and nobody on in the first inning. That is the lowest run producing scenario there is. Better to have him hit 1st or 2nd. The first inning is generally 20% of his ABs each year. That's a significant amount.

I based my line up after some historically batting spots...

Over the last three years:

Kinsler - Lead off spot 1272 AB's 

Cozart - 2nd 545 AB's (.344 OBP)

Trout - 2nd (666 AB's and 3rd 864 AB's)

 

If I am Scioscia...this is what I look at...thats a pretty solid 1-3.  If the move Trout to the 2 spot...

This whole thread is useless if OCD Scioscia keeps Albert anchored in the cleanup spot bouncing into double plays all season.

That's the first thing that has to change if the offensive potential of this team is going to be realized.

Sample lineups using three year running averages for all the stat's. I purposely kept 1B empty on the vs. LHP side because it all depends on who the backup is.
