San Juan would be even better.    Imagine all of the 20-15 games in that crackerjack dimensions stadium.

The fact that you think San Juan will have electricity and basic necessities in the next decade is very inspiring AO. Keep up the positive vibes.

expansion - "If I were MLB, I would pick Las Vegas over Portland"

Portland may have more full time residents/ population -- Las Vegas is a national/ international city that will draw fans from all over the country/ world.

also, I take one look at the empty seats at Safeco Field this year (starting in June/ July) and again, Las Vegas is the pick over Portland.

Unless its the Bad Bastards of Baseball (anyone who has not seen that film about the independent ownership by Bing Russell of a minor league team in Portland back in the 70's -- watch it --great film) I don't think baseball sells all that well in the Pacific Northwest......heck, even Vancouver lost it's AAA team a few years back (think they're single A now) that played in that great old ballpark -- Nat Bailey Stadium.........a real throwback of a park -- in a good way.

in all honesty, if you were in vegas for the weekend, would you take in a baseball game? most people would not.

Depends upon if your home team is in town.

How many people from, say, Baltimore are ever in Vegas in any given weekend, much less on the very weekend that the Orioles are playing?

Portland would totally rally aroundan MLB team. When it gets chilly, they will just put on heavier flannel shirts. Parking would be easy cuz everyone would ride their bike, and the Decemberists could sing the National Anthem.

In other news, I’d like to live in Portland.

2nd chapter. if you were in vegas for the weekend and your home team was in town, would you take in a game? your home team. a team you can see 81 days a year, whenever you want. you'd go to a game while you were on vacation in sin city? most people would not.

Vegas would need a different business model... the ballpark would need to be a casino, with slot machines instead of seats, poker tables instead of dinner tables, etc.

You could bet on every pitch: curve ball, change up, fast ball, pop up, single to a HR. Everything would be up for grabs.

The Area around Portland is beautiful, Lakes, Rivers, forest, and Mt Hood. It rains way more in New Orleans than Portland. I'd live there.

We have just the spot. Better talk now, before construction begins on the new AAA park.

Without two expansion teams that whole plan falls apart. Portland seems to be able to support a basketball franchise.

Portland metropolitan area.
includes Clackamas, Columbia, Multnomah, Washington and Yamhill counties, Oregon and Clark and Skamania counties, Washington.
2015 population: 2,389,228.

Las Vegas at 583,756

Hate to pop your bubble, but the Las Vegas metropolitan area has a population of just under two million. Current estimate 1,951,269.

I've planned trips to cities around the Angels being in town -- so, for some people that might be a yes, for no other reason to see the park like was the case with me.   Granted, the percentage of vacationers that ALSO happen to be baseball fans is likely a lot smaller so the impact is negligible, but I don't think it's nutty to expect a baseball fan to want to check out a new ballpark or his team while on Vacation.

FWIW -- I agree with your overall sentiment..   I don't think tourism should be factored into the equation more so than population or any of the other factors.  Not sure if a case can be made that on population alone it's a better potential spot for a MLB team than say Memphis/Nashville, Charlotte, or Indianapolis.   CA and Tex probably have cities/areas with significantly better population bases but they won't be given any consideration.

Personally, I have always viewed LV as a potential spot for a team looking to relocate, not sure MLB would award an expansion team to LV because of the while gambling thing and MLB's desire to pretend they are above such things.

This will not happen for at a minimum, ten years. Hell I could see it happening 50 years down the road.

Besides, no way the Mariners let a team in Portland which they consider their market.

They can't block a team from forming in another state.
