He's not going to opt out, why would he?  How much more do u think he's going to get exactly?

And 2021 is a long time, what are they going to do with Jones and Adell?  Trade them and watch them be all stars for another team at league minimum while the angels pay a washed up Upton 25M?

We will a DH after 2020. And his contract ends afyer 2021

How fast do you see Adell and Jones  progressing to all star level of play?

If the Angels don't win the WS and/or Upton turns out to be a rental I look forward to the day Long does anything in the majors and someone posts about how bad the trade was.

you'll only need to wait until Long pitches a 6-hit complete game on the same night Upton goes 0-4.

you know, when your cup is half empty, it's okay to refill it.

For the record, I love this deal. For the short term, it lengthens the lineup, especially with the year Simba is having, and it cost us little.

If he opts out, great, we only gave up Long. If he doesn't, he's still relatively young and productive and could be a long-term asset for whom we gave up relatively little.

Anybody know what Justin Upton's batting splits are at Angel Stadium? Does he hit better on the road, or will he be a better hitter at Angel Stadium?

Upton can transition to DH at some point. Calhoun will likely be traded before he reaches free agency.

Anyhow, better to have too many options than too few. If Upton stays on, the OF, 1B and DH are all going to get crowded as Hermosillo and Thaiss eventually graduate to the majors later next year, and then Jones in 2019, Adell/Marsh in 2020, etc. On the other hand, it doesn't hurt Herm and Thaiss to have another year to fill out, and Jones likely won't be ready until some time in 2019. Not to mention that Pujols will eventually lose his starting job if he continues as is.

I really like Hermosillo, but the only prospects that have a solid chance of being better than Upton are Jones and Adell, and they're still years away. Not to mention that Hermosillo would make a terrific 4th outfielder/pinch runner, and eventually edge Kole out.

Could he really though, OF is one spot this off season where there are a lot of options.  Its no given he gets a raise even with the year hes having, its certainly no guarantee even if it is reasonable.  One could argue he might not even be the top OF in the market with Martinez also doing what he is doing.

Yes he absolutely can.  He is coming off of a great year where he would be the best outfielder available.  He wasn't the best outfielder available 2 years ago when it was him, Cespedes, Gordon and Heyward and he got a big deal with the 3rd year opt out.  So yea, he could easily get that kind of contract.

As cool as getting Upton is, it makes the Hernandez trade that much more of a head-scratcher. We would probably have at least two more wins with Hernandez and so did Eppler assume his bullpen was good enough to trade one of his best RP and was not sure he would be going after Upton? Doesn't it make more sense to keep a good RP and add Upton?

Id be happier if it was a stanton, or another long term guy. But agreed with mark68, its also not gonna hamstring our payroll, so thats good.

Pitching has to hold together, but this could be one of those moves that people say later was the difference maker.

Same time wonder what it does to chemistry, swapping maybin for upton..

We acquired Melvin's better brother and sent the slumping Maybin off to the Astros for cash. We gave up  a strong AA pitching prospect and a lower level minor leaguer to be named. We have Justin Upton for possibly four more seasons. With no more Hambone, Billy might actually deal with Upton in the offseason by giving him the raise he might have wanted with the opt-out. I guess this means we ain't getting Verlander, but who cares? Trout has some solid protection, possibly for years, and maybe Albert, too.

GOOD DEAL, BILLY!!!.

I don't get how Long is a "strong" prospect.  He. Is. not.  We got a legit middle of the order bat, an all star that can run and man LF for a guy that's not even a top 200 prospect in baseball.  The Angels haven't had a bat like Upton in left field for long ass time.  I don't wanna hear about this Long guy.  Who gives a shit.
