Angels have acquired RHP Damien Magnifico

Recommended Posts

Kipper was a solid arm, that for whatever reason the Angels buried on their depth chart. He should have been in AAA already after his impressive showing in AA and dominance in his return.

He has your typical pitcher's body (long and lean), and an average 91 mph fastball. Decent enough Breaking ball and change up too. He's the type of arm that you can slot in the back of the rotation and get 180 innings a year out of.

The Angels preferred upside though, which is why, despite his performance, he was still firmly behind Meyer, Banuelos, Scribner....

Magnifico is an interesting prospect. He projects to be a very capable reliever at the major league level, but he just could not get it together last year, and is more of the same this year. I don't know if the Angels feel they can turn him around, but it's a gamble.

Not a big fan of this trade. There's so much uncertainty within the rotation right now that we could've used a stabilizing presence like Kipper. Magnifico needs to be fixed. The only way this works out is if the Angels do indeed get him right, and he becomes a very reliable 7th inning arm. But with Middleton and Paredes being ready, Pounders solidifying his spot, and Bedrock, Bailey and Street returning at some point, Magnifico may be squeezed out.

Is he a starter?

He hasn't started since A Ball...

But, Parker Bridwell was also mostly a reliever and they've had him starting in Mobile. Given what success they've had with Ramirez, I almost wonder if they're browsing around for similar relievers in the minors who could be converted back.

They traded for Magnifico and DFA'd Jose Valdez. I really don't see the difference. Both throw mid to upper 90's, both have a nice slider, both haven't put it together in the majors. Both miss the zone.

And both were relatively cheap to acquire....they've had a good look at Valdez....now they get a look at Mangnifico....run 'em in, run 'em out, if they don't show enough....it fits the profile of probably a dozen pitchers Eppler has picked up in the last year ....probably the last legit shot most are going to get (although, with good stuff, sometimes you keep getting chances)...So far, we have seemingly hit a home run with Ramirez.....

Does Magnifico have options?
