Is Las Vegas a dump?

Recommended Posts

My friend moved from NJ to Las Vegas 18 years ago. He worked in an auto-body shop here, and opened his own place in LV. He got a contract to do the body work for most of the mega-resorts when they loan cars to the high rollers, and they beat the shit out of them.

Doing very well for himself.

vegas is a novelty. it's kind of like putting lipstick on a pig.

the last time i was there my family was with me. we headed over to excaliber on saturday night hoping to catch their medieval times-type show. it was sold out so we went back outside to catch a cab back to our hotel. i've never seen so many women dressed up for hitting the town as i did that night. i've also never seen so many skanks as were out on the prowl that night. and nearly every single girl was with a group and each of them had a drink in their hands as they waited for their car/taxi. kept thinking that a single guy on the hunt would have had a pretty darn good time that night as his long as his standards were pretty low.

this sounds terrible.

vegas is awesome! we go a few times a year.

we have it down to a science. amazing restaurants, shows, cabana day by the pool, gambling, bottle service at clubs (don't always do this though, just if we have a group because waiting at the bar for drinks at a club takes way too long), etc.

there's a great steak place at golden nugget on fremont street we like to hit up called Vic & Anthony's. very classy, old school legit. legit steak and cocktails.

if you do it right it's a f*cking blast. i love that town.

Im over it. Have gone several times. Have had far more good times than any bad ones. But id rather see the places the casinos are modeled after than the casinos these days.

True fact: It costs less to go to the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris than it does to go to the top of the fake one at the Paris Hotel on the Strip. The fake one is a third of the height.

VHF and mrwicked summed up the great parts of Las Vegas pretty well. To have a great experience you have to know yourself and find the places that give you energy. If you truly care about your time it's best to do your research. The strip in general is an obvious facade, but there is substance in entertainment variety, quality restaurant choices, and gambling options. The horror stories or personal bad experiences should be treated like incidents in a vacuum; a bias of small sample size . If you only hangout at the Excalibur/CircusCircus/Stratosphere for example you are going to experience a different Vegas than say the Mirage/TI/Venetian/Caesars. You will have the weekend warriors who come in and treat Las Vegas like their own personal shit show and I think that can be misleading to those who treat it a bit more responsibly. With my limited experience of 5 years, I run into a lot more of the no judgement, relaxed, do-your-own-thing kind of people. Perhaps that's more of a cognitive bias/perception because I choose to hangout at places that invite that mindset. As a poker dealer/player I spend a lot of time on the strip and it's consistently pleasant. Las Vegas is very affordable living and like most cities there are some bad areas and some beautiful areas. Red Rock Canyon is a great place to hike and unwind. Off the strip establishments (ie Frankies) are charming and welcoming. The 24 hour aspect and no last-call spoil me. I love Las Vegas and I plan on living here until my last breath. Is Vegas a dump? No.

Also: ... Titties.

All those words and yet not a single mention of Gold &a Silver pawn, Chumlee, or the old man.

tsk tsk, Derek.

Not sure if this is still true, but at one time Vegas had more CHURCHES per capita than any city in America.

When I was there working at McCarron ...the local hangouts were "The Rumrunner" (The Scumrunner) On Trop.. and Sam's Town .

I remember at night being able to hear lions and tigers roaring at some of the compounds scattered around the area I lived.

How do you feel about the Raiders moving in? Do you think they will develop a local fanbase since Vegas seems to be mostly transplants?

It will take time, but I believe that there will be a local fan base. This city has not really had much that it could call its own. The hotels are largely for the tourists. Once the Raiders and the Golden Knights arrive, all of that changes. Initially a lot of the Raiders crowd will be commuters from California, but over time that will change (especially when the reality sets in that this time, the Raiders aren't moving back to Oakland or LA.
