James Shields is available..

MLB Network's Jon Heyman reports that the Padres have had discussions with a few teams about a potential trade of James Shields.

Heyman says the Orioles are one club known to have had talks with the Padres. He also says the Red Sox have talked to the Padres about starting pitching and Shields is a "logical" target. Shields posted a disappointing 3.91 ERA last season in his first year with the Padres, but he also logged 200 innings for a ninth straight campaign and had a career-best 9.6 K/9 rate. The veteran right-hander still has three years and $63 million left of his contract.

Not at that money. Now would I if they picked up $20 million and the Angels paid him around $13 million a year for the next three years, probably. Not sure if he has any trade value, but the only way it happens is if we either pick up more money than any other team, or if we have something they specifically want, which I highly doubt. We have no prospects left that are worth it. I would also have a problem with this being the guy that Arte was willing to go over the luxury tax for. Another option could be trading CJ and all of his salary for Shields and all of his salary, it would basically be the same thing and then we wouldn't be over the tax.

I think they're just trying to unload the contract. May not take a top prospect.

It goes without saying the Angels don't have that guy. The question is does the current display of talent by Baldoquin in Spring training open a few eyes? I think he has looked pretty good out there but the Angels should keep him to become their next 2nd baseman when Giavotella hits free agency.

No. This team needs offense, wasting money on pitching when we cant afford a decent lineup would be stupid. We need a 3B, 2B, or LF.

For this season and probably next we are fine at 3rd base offensively. Left field, we will see, I have a feeling we will be pleasantly surprised with Nava's production batting in front of Trout. At 2nd base, yea we probably need someone. However the team needs a bullpen arm and a starter.

As I said in predictions thread, I can see quite a few possibilities for a Padres/Angels deal sometime in the next few months. The Angels would likely have to take on some salary, but Padres have several players who could be available that'd make sense for the Angels both as rentals for a playoff push or long-term plans.

Regarding the rentals, folks like Jon Jay or Andrew Cashner are players that I could see the Angels having some interest in when they hit free agency after this year, and trading for them early would give them a head start, could save them some bucks in the offseason and give them an advantage, which would be important with our budget restrictions and the weak class ahead.

Padres also regularly have a handful of decent relief options on hand, and someone like Nick Vincent or Kevin Quackenbush would be a huge addition; either as protection for Smith leaving via FA at end of year, or replacement if Smith struggles.

If the Angels were able to pry free someone like Myers or Renfroe, I could see both the Angels and Padres kicking tires on freeing up Cron who could be an interesting piece to the Pads and someone relatively expendable to the Angels, especially if Choi sticks. We'd have to surrender some other young talents, but guys like Baldoquin, Kubitza, Cowart, Smith, or one of the young catchers may be enticing if we're eating salary.

Derek Norris and Yangervis Solarte are interesting as well.

I fully expect the Angels to actually pursue a FA SP this offseason, and with the weak class and their payroll restrictions it may make sense to try and acquire a guy like Cashner or Shields before then.
