Why can't this organization develop relief pitchers?

Is it that hard to draft and develop relievers? Seems like other teams can do it because every year the Angels are either shelling out multi-year deals to other teams' relievers or acquiring them off the waiver wire, minor league free agency or rule 5 draft.

K-Rod and Shields both came up in 2002. Since then I can't think of anyone drafted and developed by the organization who could consistently throw strike one and hold leads.

Arredondo looked like he might be one, but he got released because nobody comes back from Tommy John surgery anymore.

Maybe no other organization has developed even one consistent relief pitcher in 11 years but I doubt it.

You might not have noticed but this team isn't really developing anyone at this point. Particularly on the pitching side.

Arredondo got released cuz he was a douche.

Darrin O'day?

It's true.  They haven't had the best track record of developing relievers lately.  Perhaps it was the high upside approach.  Guys that did well did really well and stuck as a starter.  Guys who didn't totally flamed out.  Now that there is more of a balanced approach, some guys may actually still stick as relievers.  Big armed college guys like Alvarez, Sappington, Morin (not sure if he's a big arm), Adams, Wood, Scoggins, Clevinger.  Plus, there hasn't been much of an international presence lately.

everyone else that had mild success over the last 15 years were scrap heap pickups

weber

donnelley

kevin gregg?  (very mild)

shiggy was brought in from abroad

I remember when the Angels were "getting Shiggy" with it. Those were the days when the Rally Monkey was earning his pay and the Marine Layer wasn't getting drunk when the Angels were batting :(

At least back in '12 we got Texas' ace while they paid a king's ransom for Dice K II  B)

AZMIke- Hindsight is 20/20 as they say. People on this board moaned about Stoneman and his cheap and stealth ways of conducting business for years. In my humble opinion, the blame lies squarely on the inability of Soch and his coaching staff to light a fire under these guys. Mix in the fact that these spoiled millionaires have zero reason to go the extra mile and this is what we get.

Yes, you remember Joseph's dreams re seven years of famine would follow seven years of abundance?

These things tend to come in cycles. We had it good for a long time with K-Rod, Percival, et al...

The problem might be not simply development, but just as much in evaluation.

Take Carpenter as the example. How long has he been in this org? (seems like a long time)

How many times has he been up and down? (seems like it has been quite a few)

WHO decided that this guy was ML material and just needed some work, in the first place?

Butcher has had a dismal career here, and "fall guy" or not, it is long past time for some new direction.

His "in game" relief choices (has to at least give suggestions to MS) are as ineffective as his mound visits.

Dipoto obviously knows pitching. He got Frieri at a crucial time. He traded Haren for two good young pitchers...and that has turned out as pretty much robbery. I feel that being the new guy, Dipoto has received some pretty bad info from some inept coaches, when it come to evaluating the young pitching in this org.

Time for "Butchy" to go. It won't solve every problem, but at least it is a start. Dipoto has to know someone he trusts, to fill the role. Just like with firing Hatcher,  Dipoto will have to fight both Scioscia and Moreno to get it done, since both of them have shown that they value personal loyalty, way above winning baseball games.

AJ's thread talks about JD addressing the lack of scouting and development success in this org by hiring some 35 newcomers to those two areas.

Maybe now the Wood, McPherson, Carpenter, etc. stories will decrease in volume over the next 3-4 years. That is how long it will take to rebuild thus org that Moreno allowed to flounder through his Steinbrenner ways.

Even Steinbrenner learned from his mistakes, and allowed his FO to eventually build a dynasty in the 1990s through player development, strategic acquisitions, and even the occasional superstar acquisition (occasional, not every year like Moreno did).
