Jack Howell Returns

ABC

He was part of the '86 team and was a fairly decent defensive 3rd baseman with some pop in his bat. Played third from' 87-90 but never seemed to get his bat straightened out. So frustrating because the guy had potential he couldn't unlock, I kept waiting for that breakout season that never came.

My favorite Jack Howell moment July 6, 1987

http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CAL/CAL198707060.shtml

Went to the game with a friend of mine. Jerry Reuss gave up 5 runs in the first with Angels coming up to Face the reigning Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens.

Angels did nothing against Clemens for 6 innings and were down 7-0 after 6. Red Sox fans were merciless in their taunting of the locals. My friend wanted to leave. I would never leave after 6 innings unless it was involving a trip to the emergency room.

Angels start getting to Clemens in the 7th with 4 runs including a Doug DeCinces two run shot. Mark Ryal ties the game in the 8th with another two run home run.

Game ended up going to the bottom of the 12 when Jack Howell hit a 3 run walk off into the old bullpen in right field.

Second favorite moment was the broken bat home run he hit in Yankees Stadium in a nationally televised game.

My dad was at that game, he likes to bring that one up a lot. He got to his seat in the bottom of the first inning (typical) and thought he sure as heck picked the wrong game to go to.
