Hearing #Angels owner Arte Moreno really waffling on whether to take payroll past $189-million luxury tax threshold.

Mike DiGiovanna ‏@MikeDiGiovanna

The $40 million or so #Angels still owe Josh Hamilton gnawing at Arte Moreno, who would need to incur tax to sign big FA OF.

Or posturing.

I don't buy for a minute that Arte isn't willing to drop some dough if the opportunity is there. He has done that time and time again, even after being burned doing so. This is to keep folks from assuming they're getting desperate since the Walker trade was close.

Everyone know has the extreme need, a specific window to compete, an owner who wants to win, and the money for it. The Angels are downplaying that because they have always preferred private, under-the-radar, out of nowhere negotiations.

Don't get cold feet now. If you want to play with the big boys you need to spend the money. If you don't want to spend the money then you gotta sell off parts and rebuild. This is the result of signing aging stars to backloaded deals. If he couldn't handle the fall out he shouldn't be spending the money in the first place.

Yep. Sitting back will just cause them to waste another year of Trout while they have him.

Coming out and saying we are ready to spend over the tax, especially since none of the FA OFers have signed, would only give leverage back to the agents. They're taking advantage of Zobrist's lower than expected deal to try and a conservative spending plan in place to keep the dollars as low as possible ere in the initial stages.

Just like the report the other day that Arte didn't want to set the market. He waits for that to become more clear then steps in, makes a very competitive offer, and gives the player x hours to accept.

This has been his MO since day one. All our FAs came out of nowhere, within a 24 hour period, if that.

If anything saying vague, possibly misleading things like this make me think progress is being made.

Guerrero, Pujols, Hamilton, even Hunter - all those had just scant speculation or casual murmurings until right before the ink dried.

Not only have just those two guys been signed, but neither really got the money we all thought they might. There were some thinking Zobrist would get four years and $72 Million.

Zobrist was just on the MLB channel.  He was all over how thrilled he was to be in Illinois, he apparently has lots of friends and relatives there.  He gets to play for a known to him manager, and for a team with a great chance to win it all.  If the Cubs win after all these years, it will be party central in Chicago, and I think he wants part of that glory.  I think he could have signed for more elsewhere, but this was a great personal choice for him.
