WTF is South Carolina thinking with Muschamp?

Will Muschamp is the worst head coach I have seen in my entire life. It is no exaggeration to say that he almost destroyed the Florida program. In 2013 the Gators were 4-8, their first losing season since 1979. Almost any negative record that the Gators could achieve was met during the Muschamp regime. First back-to-back losses to Georgia since the late 1980s (Muschamp lost three in a row). First home loss to Vanderbilt since 1945. First back-to-back homecoming losses since the 1940s. First loss to an FCS team in school history. First loss to a team with less than 120 yards of total offense (accomplished three times). Most lopsided loss to Florida State ever. School record for most yardage surrendered to an opponent (Alabama, 2013).

At the time when Jim McElwain was hired, the recruiting class that Florida was projected to sign had four commitments and was ranked #110 in FBS by Rivals.com - dead last in the SEC. CBS Sports reported that the only reason that it wasn't smaller was that some kids who wanted to decommit found other options closed. Top skill position players wouldn't even visit campus, let alone sign. If a program can't recruit, it dies.

Muschamp's teams were plagued by injuries, and most of them seemed to happen in practice. There were widespread rumors that Muschamp doled out playing time to offensive players based upon how they blocked in practice, which led to both injuries and fights. There were brawls on the practice field and a near brawl in the locker room after the Georgia Southern loss that Muschamp walked out on and told his assistants, "You handle it."

Home games against major conference opponents that once sold out in minutes were included as part of mini season ticket packages. Ticket prices were cut for several home games. Despite all of this, Florida's idiot AD Jeremy Foley (who was also stupid enough to hire Ron Zook, and to give contract extensions to both him and Muschamp) was prepared to keep Muschamp for another year had Florida beaten South Carolina in the final home game of 2014. It seemed all but certain with 90 seconds left, but Carolina won in overtime after blocking a Gator punt and scoring the tying touchdown in the final minute.

Muschamp is under the mistaken impression that losing control and screaming at players is helpful and motivating. The same coach who said that Florida fans needed to "get a grip" because they didn't like losing seasons broke his hand punching a dry erase board in the locker room, and once challenged a Gator fan to a fist fight after yet another loss.

It is ironic that the very program that rescued Florida from the incompetence of the Muschamp regime has now hired him as head coach. In case anyone believes that he learned anything from his time in Gainesville, his staff includes several members of his staff at Florida, including offensive coordinator Kurt Roper, who directed the #104 ranked offense in FBS in 2014. Muschamp, by his own admission, sees offense as a way to rest his defense.

Another example of Will Muschamp's idiocy: Derrick Henry just won the Heisman Trophy. Henry is from Yulee, FL, just north of Jacksonville. He wanted to play at Florida. Muschamp recruited him - but he planned to convert him to linebacker (only defense matters to Muschamp). This is the kind of judge of talent that he is.

Not to mention that the reason that Florida has no quarterback depth now is because Muschamp ran off the two best quarterbacks on the roster, who went on to have good college careers elsewhere (Jacoby Brissett at North Carolina State and Tyler Murphy at Boston College). The quarterback who he kept (Jeff Driskel), he failed to develop. Driskel transferred to Louisiana Tech for his senior year and at one time he was leading he nation in QB rating - proving that his lack of success at Florida was a coaching problem.

Muschamp is regathering the architects of this miracle on his staff at South Carolina.

Wasn't Henry committed to Georgia at one point as well

I don't know about that, but it was well documented that Henry and his whole family were Gator fans and he badly wanted to go to Florida - until Muschamp insisted on converting the state's leading rusher to linebacker.

Seemingly every day brings me more proof of what a moron that Muschamp is, and deepens the mystery of why anyone would ever offer the man another job as a coach, let alone a head coach. He is supposedly some kind of defensive genius, yet Auburn's defense got much worse under his leadership. The only suspense in the season was whether it would finish ranked above or below #100 in FBS.

This is what Auburn got for $2M for one season (final national rankings in defense):

Total defense: 89

Passing yardage: 76

Rushing yardage: 91

Turnovers gained: Tied for 70

That is pathetic defense for an SEC school.

Are the SC AD and Muschamps close friends?

Can't think of any other reason to hire the guy.

One of the talking heads at ESPN said that Muschamp's agent has his tentacles all over the SEC. The job had already been turned down twice, but they would have been better off with almost anyone else. When you look at how far he dragged down the Florida program in only four years, the AD at South Carolina is risking the future of the entire athletic department with this hire. It takes a special kind of incompetent to be unable to recruit skill players at the flagship university of the state that probably produces more of them than anywhere.

Interesting, since there were articles on the Florida fan forums yesterday that said that Grier transferring "is not part of the plan". I can't say that it surprises me, though. Grier would not have been eligible to play before game 7 of the 2016 season, and there are two top QBs already committed. It would have been very difficult for him to unseat one of them halfway through the season.

Felipe Franks looks really good.

Harris is god awful but he's 2-0 vs UGA

Harris' main problems seem to be related to his height. He has a lot of balls batted down at the line, and he has trouble spotting open receivers over the rushing linemen. He won't even be in the equation next season. Jack Del Rio's kid has also transferred in, and early reports are that he looks very good in drills.
