Will potential halo collapse cost Trout another MVP?

Recommended Posts

On MLB Tonight the other night both Reynolds and Ripkin said Donaldson is their MVP... So ya, I think this team is going to cost Trout yet another MVP.

I think Trout hitting .169 is going to cost the Angels the division and the wildcard. He has to elevate his game because honestly he is dragging the team down this entire month.

The season isn't over yet but how is Donaldson worth more than Trout so far? Because he has outplayed him recently? It's a long season...

Trout

OPS+: 176

WAR: 7.1

Donalndson:

OPS+: 152

WAR: 6.3

Though the MVP voters are probably going to ignore both of those statistics so you guys are probably right.

The title of this thread bugs me, it makes it sound like there are the "halo", then there is Trout.  The last I knew Trout was part of the "halos", hence if they collapse it's at least partly Trout's fault, and he shouldn't be the MVP.

This all depends on whether you consider the MVP to be the best overall player, or the best overall player on a team that makes it into the postseason

Trout's the only reason they're still even in the playoff hunt at this point. Can't expect him to carry the team all year long. Everybody goes through slumps

He'll need to get hot again though and the team obviously will need to make the playoffs if he has a shot. Right now, Donaldson has already passed him up as the AL MVP favorite and he doesn't seem to be slowing down(2-2 with a HR already today)

The voters don't care about how you start, it's how you finish. I don't think it should be that way but that is just human nature. The Blue Jays are soaring and the Angels are tanking and part of that is Trout slumping. It won't matter to them that Trout was better.

The voters seem to think that this is who should win.

Two years ago, Miggy won it even though Trout was a better overall player and the Angels had a better record but fell short of the wild card. Detroit squeaked into the playoffs because the White Sox choked down the stretch and allowed the Tigers to pass them for the division title.

The Tigers didn't even have the 5th best record in the AL, but they went to the playoffs and Miggy got MVP because of it.
