Nice article, but given how universally derided the home plate umpiring has been to start the year, I wonder how good the data is. Is that factored in the rating?

It seems umpires in general are just calling more strikes than ever before.  I know Iannetta was trying to improve that part of his game, but it's too soon to tell.

Small sample size, but to see any improvement is a sight for sore eyes.

“I think I might have given the appearance that some borderline pitches were lower than what they really were,” Iannetta said Wednesday. “I was setting a false bottom, making it look like I was dropping my glove even farther. I’d give my target, I’d bring my glove up higher, and then I’d go catch it, so everything was going down.

“I just worked on reversing that. I give my target at the bottom of the zone and try to catch everything on the way up.”

Framing samples are viable rather quickly.

It's important to note that at age 32, Iannetta still wants to be a better ballplayer and wants to put in the work to that end.
