Land O' Lakes drops 'racist' Native American image from packaging after nearly 100 years

Many on social media are celebrating the move, criticizing the company for using the image of a Native American woman for its branding in the first place.

Land O’ Lakes has an updated look for 2020.

The farmer-owned dairy cooperative, which produces butter, cheese and other milk products, has dropped the Native American maiden image from its packaging, opting instead for just a landscape.

The logo, which has been the company’s label for nearly 100 years since it was founded in Minnesota in 1921, has been called “racist” and criticized for its use of the “butter maiden.”

The new label was announced in a press release from Land O’ Lakes in February.

(Courtesy: Arizona Game and Fish Department)

The Arizona Game and Fish Department shared what it said were the first known photos of bald eagles nesting within the arms of a saguaro cactus taken in the state.

“A rare sight,” the agency tweeted.

So rare that it marks the first time in decades that anyone had even reported seeing the country’s iconic bird nested in one of the state’s iconic cactuses.

The last time was in 1937, according to Kenneth “Tuk” Jacobson, the agency's coordinator of raptor management.

Kermit Lee of Lee's Trading Post had mentioned large nests in saguaros along the Verde River that were believed to belong to bald eagles -- but there were no photographs or other documentation.

A team of biologists out on a bald eagle surveying trip made the new find near a central Arizona reservoir, according to Jacobson.

He called the discovery “amazing.”

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says bald eagles are “an Endangered Species Act success story.”

They were in danger of extinction 40 years ago due to habitat destruction, poaching and the contamination of their food supply with chemicals such as DDT, according to the Fish and Wildlife Service.

The conservation effort succeeded in bolstering the numbers, and in 2007 they were taken off the endangered species list -- although they are still classified as protected.

Bald eagles sometimes have multiple nests within their territories, mostly atop large trees, and those nests can weigh as much as half a ton, according to the Wildlife Service. They sometimes nest on cliffs or on the ground -- and, in rare cases, a cactus.

The saguaro cactuses themselves have been threatened recently, with thieves illegally digging them up to ship around the world.

California man allegedly hops fence, enters closed Disney's Adventure park

An 18-year-old man will face trespassing charges after he allegedly broke into Disney’s California Adventure Park on Sunday night, which was closed due to the coronavirus, reports said.

Jeremiah Smith was allegedly seen by park security jumping a fence at 10:24 p.m., a public information officer for the Anaheim Police Department said, according to ABC 7.

Police said they discovered Smith at 11 p.m. in a backstage construction area in the southeast section of the park, near the Guardians of the Galaxy ride.

Following his arrest, Smith was released by police with a court appearance ticket. In court, he could face a small fine or short jail sentence police said.

The park has been closed since mid-March and officials had planned on reopening at the end of that month. However, on March 27, officials announced the park would be closed “until further notice.”

It is a strange thing to do.

it'd be different if, for example, you could sneak on to space mountain and just ride it over and over again.

or the jungle cruise and shoot those stupid hyenas.

i hate hyenas.

Breast implants deflected bullet, saved woman's life

She was saved by silicon.

A woman survived a close-range gunshot thanks to her silicone breast implants, doctors have discovered.

Researchers detailed how a silicone breast implant deflected the bullet from nipping the 30-year-old woman’s vital organs in a new study published in the SAGE medical journal.

“The implant caused the change in the trajectory of the bullet,” surgeon Giancarlo McEvenue, a co-author of the study, told CNN.

Romania makes millions from handing out coronavirus fines

Robert Negoita, mayor of Bucharest’s Sector Three, was fined the equivalent of $2,200 when he was caught cycling in a public park, which was closed.

As of Wednesday morning, Romania has had 9,242 confirmed covid-19 cases, with 507 deaths, according to a tally compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

A state of emergency was first imposed on the country of 20 million on March 16, and was recently extended to the middle of May.

Last month, Cosmin Andreica, leader of the policemen’s union Europol told Digi24.ro that Romanians were being very creative when it came to using loopholes in leaving their house.

Romanians are allowed out to walk their pets, but in this case, Andreica explained: “We’ve had situations where citizens were holding a fish in the bag and they said they had taken their pet out for a walk. It's a real story. Or we’ve had a situation where someone took the cat for a ride 30 kilometers from home, on the back seat of the car.”

"but honey, it's science! plus it might save your life some day!"
