I haven't been in So. Cal in years. Is it really noticeably better?

From when I was a kid.  Absolutely.  

 

Let's put it this way.  When I was in elementary, jr high, they would have stage smog alerts.  I think 3 being death outside.  I remember when we were in a stage 3 and couped up inside, and I could barely see the other building next to us in the San Gabriel Valley.  In Redlands, during college, after a cold day or a rainy day.  You could see the smog come in from LA.  

 

While in the IE, it's still bad.  It's not nearly as bad as it was.  In LA, you rarely get a day when you could see the pollution.  The pollution is still there, but not like it was, or is in China.

My folks have told me that in the 70's, the smog would hang thick and brown over LA.

The only times I've seen it like that in recent memory is after a rain storm, when it gets knocked down to near surface level.

One of the jokes back in the day when I used to smoke were, I'd rather breathe LA Air through a filter.  It was probably healthier doing it that way also.

When I was a kid I remember driving the 138 to the 15 and going into the IE, and seeing the "dirty brown halo" over the area.  It was terrible.  It's still there but it's definitely much better than it was.

Does anyone remember the days in the IE and San Gabriel Valley when the smog was so thick you couldn't see the mountains and the sky was perpetually gray during the summer months? 

 

Those days seem to be behind us.
