Which fomer players should have the # retired by now?

Who do you think should/will get their number retired eventually?

Why hasn't Salmon's #15 been retired by now?

Do you agree with retiring numbers for Autry and Reese?

I've been thinking about this a bit recently.

Your first three questions seem to be all about Salmon so let's just cut to the chase on that. He had a solid career as a lifetime Angel and held the title of the only Angels ROY. That still doesn't warrant retiring a jersey number. It is like the Hall of Fame not the hall of just really solid.

At this point the only future consideration is Trout.

As for Autry why would you even question the founder of the Angels franchise as not worthy of being permanently recognized? You would have to not know anything about his ownership and connection to players and fans to be putting any thought into not having him represented on the wall.

Reese is a legacy link between the PCL Angels and the AL Angels franchise. He was originally a bat boy for the PCL Angels, played for the PCL Oakland franchise, was purchased by the Yankees and played two years there and was Ruth's roommate.

He was on the '31 Yankees WS champion team then in 32 was traded and eventually ended up back in the PCL and playing for the Angels. At age 71 the Angels hired him as a conditioning coach at continued until his death 22 years later. Nolan Ryan named one of his sons Reese in his honor.

Again, it is about understanding the history of a franchise.

Salmon's number is unofficially retired. No one has had #15 since him.

GA is another good candidate. Sure, they came out of the 90s when the Angels were less recognizable than the current Texas Rangers, but they meant a lot to us who grew up at that time.

Autry and Reese go without saying. So many players were mentored by Reese.

Does GA warrant number retirement?

He had over 2,300 hits as a Halos player, way above anyone else, had back-to-back-to-back-to-back seasons with at least close to 30 HRs and well over 100 rbis, and of course the ultimate WS winning hit in 2002.

If Vlad makes the Hall of Fame and has an Angel hat on his plaque, it would be pretty hard for them not to retire 27. They might end up retiring it twice unless Trout changes his number.

This raises an interesting question: How do you retire a number that has already been issued to another player? Trout wears #27, and Hank Conger wore #16 last year.

Players with retired numbers can grant permission or not as in the case of Griffey asking Tony Perez for permission to use 24. Perez siad no.

I believe the Yanks have had numbers worn post retirement, Yogi Berra's 8 being one example.

We can avoid the whole discussion and just do a ring of honor instead.

Agree with Mudville about its understanding the Franchise.... That being said, he certainly doesn't understand the Angels Franchise if he doesn't think Salmon's 15 should be retired. 15 should be retired just as 11 should be.

The only number I currently have a problem with is 28. Carews best years were with the Twins. He made it to the HOF because of what he did with the Twins, and he is wearing a Twins hat in the hall. The retiring of his number was primarily done to make up for the way Bavasi handled his departure. It was "throwing a bone"... And you should NEVER retire a number for that reason...

Retirement means new players can't use that number again. Players who already have the number usually have the option to keep it:

If you can list Salmon's accomplishments that put him in the same category of the top players in his playing years that had their numbers retired I will be willing to concede. Even dial it back ten years, I just don't see anything Salmon did that was that remarkable he never lead the league in any offensive category.

Very good player, great guy, not a hall of fame candidate. You should probably at this point in the Franchise history be a little more picky about what numbers are retired. Mr. 299 is probably not that guy.

salmon way outperformed fregosi. if fregosi is up on the wall, and he certainly deserves to be, then salmon and GA deserve to be up there.

Mariano Rivera was grandfathered in with #42 for a long time after the league retired it.
