Max Scherzer talks with Tigers tabled

Boras does what his clients want him to.  He's been successful for a reason.

To me this is very risky for Scherzer.  It so happens that his best year was his most recent and he presumes if he does it again he will get an even larger payday.  But to date he seems to have had a Greinke type career so the money being offered doesn't seem far off.

More power to him if he wants to try and get another 40 mil but he's starting his 29yo season and will be 30 half way through.  An injury blows him out of the water and a season similar to his others probably gets him something similar to what he is being offered.  If he steps back a bit then teams will wonder if 2013 was an aberration and if he's going to start declining.

It's also much different now than in the past as there is much more accurate data teams have access to in order to determine whether they think a guy will hold up.  Nothing is set is stone, but if he shows any signs, it's much more noticeable.

get real.

Scherzer has an ERA over 4 in Spring training while the Tigers true Ace has an ERA of 0.00. Yup, Verlander has been lights out the entire spring while Scherzer has been expecting better money with a lesser resume. That's as real as it gets.

The Tigers are better off in a wait and see this season if Scherzer is just a one year wonder. It's not as though his demands are going to considerably increase if he has a good year and he could drop in value if he doesn't. Either way, the Tigers are in the same position at the end of the year, choosing if he is worth the money and years. I'm sure Boras will be realistic and fair (like he was with Kendrys Morales) about his client's worth at the end of the 2014 season.
